All you do is ask questions, about things we know nothing about.......... LOL!!

Yep, time for another one!!

Why is it that the Bull Bar manufacturers don't use shear pins and a shock absorbing system on Bull Bars?

We would probably only require maybe 100 mm. of free space, which if engineered correctly, would absorb a lot of impact.

I am currently designing a nudge bar for my Honda, because no-one makes one for a HRV, and I'm thinking of building this in as well ....... because I can.

The compression units would be these high density poly urethane blocks, like what is under my Guillotine, which holds the steel in place. They have repeatedly compressed & decompressed over the last 10 years, which equates to about one million cycles.

Any thoughts?

Am I a wanker?

Am I clever?

Would you like me to send you an autographed photo of myself?

Ha ha Wolfie

Yes you are clever - but I was clever 1st.

I made exactly what you describe about 22 years ago. I used Grease in a machined piston with the grease nipple (minus stop ball) as the pressure release and used a couple of shear pins to hold the bullbar in place and to snap on any impact - I thought that a better idea than bending the chassis if I hit anything.

Everybody thought I'd gone loopy. The grease worked well in trials but I never hit a roo with it - So - great in concept - but I cant tell you how well it really works.

Now - dont go making a million with this idea cause I'd be pretty cheezed off LOL

cheers

Well, bugger!

Here I was, thinking I was being all smart & stuff.

I think I will pursue my idea on the little Honda.

you got airbags ? yes ? if so then you may run into trouble, but saying that there are a lot of airbag approved bars around that have the soft urethane bumpers on the front making them airbag compatible.

I like the basic idea though, but you would need a light interference fit on the shear pins otherwise the vibration will flog out the pin and hole in no time.

Check out the yanks bumper mounts, they have a shock absorbing system in all their cars as they have to be able to withstand a 5mph impact with no damage.

NOW a question for you oh sheetie oracle, what is the best alluminium alloy blend to use for roofrack tubing ? plain old 6060 in a t5 hardness do the trick? Im mainly concerned with vibration and fatigue resistance

Bradley, we don't do a lot in Aluminium, but what we do, it's just plain 5005 H3 from memory. This gear is pretty soft, but works well for our applications.

I will try to find out foe you.

Cheers

I'll settle for the autographed picture, thanks .. just in case this bullbar thing has legs. Then I can say ... "I knew Wolfie when ......." and impress my friends.

Tell ya what.....

People at my work reckon I'm plain nuts. When I'm welding, I sing, and make all these smart comments about myself....."Shlt I'm good!!" .... that sort of stuff.

I think it all stems back to my childhood, about wanting to be wanted. Sort of reminds me of that opening line in a Cheap Trick song....."I want you, to want........ ME!!!" That, is also one of my favourite sayings.......

Ah, nothing like marching to the beat of you own drum.LOL!!

Each morning, when I get up, as I walk past my dog, I say.."Good morning Kobi", and then proceed to answer back in a high pitched voice..."Good morning Ian".

One morning, just as I said good morning to my dog, Tracy was standing around the corner, out of sight, and quickly said.."Good morning Ian...", in a high pitched voice.

I nearly shlt myself.......

I think this is why I like going bush on my own, 'cause I'm easily amused.
