Hi All,
Looking to get away for the Labour Day long weekend in March and was thinking of heading to Sheepyard Flay / Frys Flat - or somewhere close to these.
Does anyone know if these areas usually get crowded on the Labour Day long weekend???
Any other suggestions of
places close to
Melbourne wher I can take the kids to
camp - looking for a grassed area, no crowds and river access for a splash - and off road trailer friendly.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi Moggs,
We've being going to the area for Cup and Labour weekends for the last couple of years. You need to get there early on the Friday if at all possible. Don't bother with Sheepyard itself. As others have said, Davons, Noonans, Pickerings through to 8 Mile are better - the further from Sheepyard the better. There are a lot of horse riders there and they tend to have generators so smelly and noisy. Past Tunnel Bend you enter the National Park so no dogs allowed (in case that makes a positive or negative difference to you).
March flies tend to be a problem on Labour day.
Frys tends to have large groups of bike riders.
Tobacco Flat is a
good spot and you need a 4by to get in so there are fewer people. We haven't camped there as our camper wouldn't make it in.
Other
places -
Otways, Bear Gully at Cape Liptrap (probably very crowded at this time of the year as The Prom is booked out) or around
Castlemaine on the Loddon.
We're going through a similar thought process at the moment although the boys (4.5 & 8) will want to go back to the Howqua.
Regards,
Adrian
