Hi All,

Looking to get away for the Labour Day long weekend in March and was thinking of heading to Sheepyard Flay / Frys Flat - or somewhere close to these.

Does anyone know if these areas usually get crowded on the Labour Day long weekend???

Any other suggestions of places close to Melbourne wher I can take the kids to camp - looking for a grassed area, no crowds and river access for a splash - and off road trailer friendly.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

yea we even have our own property they run weekends out of at Heyfield. Good basecamp area really!

Sheepyard and frys usually get full of 2wd's...

Luck of the draw on unpacked, Kings 1 weekend in Nov was deserted, which was long weekend, yet the following weekend was PACKED! go figure that one out!

Can be swings and roundabouts I guess or we were just plain lucky - boxing day thru new year was hardly a sole in sight at Sheepyard.

Moggs, try Eight Mile, Seven Mile, Tunnel Bend all upstream. Nick R was at Eight Mile New Year a year back - just friends there no extras. Can get there in a hire car or 4by. Otherwise you go up to Upper Jamieson but hard to get into and had heaps of wasps last year with Truckster and people galore, but more at Bindaree....

Hi Moggs

We tried 8 mile cup weekend last year. plenty of room and easy for a trailer. We also looked in at Upper Jamieson Hut. Some good camping ground there but maybe a bit harder to get to the river. Also has a water crossing to get in - would keep the 2wd'ers away but about 700mm deep (then) and not sure about trailer access.

Cheers

Hi Moggs,

We've being going to the area for Cup and Labour weekends for the last couple of years. You need to get there early on the Friday if at all possible. Don't bother with Sheepyard itself. As others have said, Davons, Noonans, Pickerings through to 8 Mile are better - the further from Sheepyard the better. There are a lot of horse riders there and they tend to have generators so smelly and noisy. Past Tunnel Bend you enter the National Park so no dogs allowed (in case that makes a positive or negative difference to you).

March flies tend to be a problem on Labour day.

Frys tends to have large groups of bike riders.

Tobacco Flat is a good spot and you need a 4by to get in so there are fewer people. We haven't camped there as our camper wouldn't make it in.

Other places - Otways, Bear Gully at Cape Liptrap (probably very crowded at this time of the year as The Prom is booked out) or around Castlemaine on the Loddon.

We're going through a similar thought process at the moment although the boys (4.5 & 8) will want to go back to the Howqua.

Regards,

Adrian

Thanks everyone for the info. I think we will just head up to Sheepyard Flat on the Saturday and keep driving until we can find a spot to wedge ourselves in. Hopefully there won't be too many drunken yahoo's about - except for myself of course :)
