Cluncking in the rear diff

G'day All my nissan patrol diff clunks when changing gear's or releasing the clutch im pretty sure it's just back lash is this a problem that i should fix if so does any one know how much this will cost

Hi Paul,
If this is severe ie: lots of backlash and it is in the crown/pinion then if not repaired it may strip the diff, and you will be going
home on the front diff after you remove the rear tailshaft.
Check it isn't just a Uni joint that is worn, much cheaper to replace.

I agree with the writer above mate. If it has been like this for a long time it may be backlash adjustment but if it has just happened recently have a good look at your uni joints or even a small chance of it being your pinion bearing.
Don't know how much it could cost as it has been a long time since I have had a diff rebuilt but I do know in a Nissan it would be quite rare. My mechanic has a wall full of Landcruiser diff centres (47 in fact) that he has had to rebuild and not one Nissan diff centre. He told me that he has never had to do one.
