I am interested in checking the engine management info on my 3LT GU Patrol via the OBDII interface.

I wish to find out if anyone has done this by making their own OBQ to serial cable. I have found some software at scantool.com, but there is no reference to Nissan Patrol (prob because they don't sell them in the states).

Specifically two questions
1. Can you directly connect OBD to serial (male) into the laptop.
2. Does anyone have wiring diagrams and error codes for the GU Patol (or know of further info)

regards and thanks in advance.

Hi Deano
I was looking into the same idea and found out the following.

1 You cant connect the OBD strainght into the laptop, you need an interface. There are 3 main standards for OBDII each requires a specific interface.

2 You can find plans for an interface at the following site http://www.scantool.net/resources.htm

However, the following site http://www.obdii.com/connector.html list the pins the OBD connector in your car must have to comply with one of the three variations. On my GU (2000) model the pins present on the connector do not corespond to any of the standards described on the site.

I did make a small connector to allow me to get the engine light to flash on the dash and give me basic error codes, but thats not really OBD data.
Im interested to see how you get on, let me know

Cheers
