Does anyone know if Motorcycle carriers are available in Oz & if they are legal. I came across some on a US website & was wondering if similar is available here.

I dont know about the legality, but i saw a 75 troop carrier the other day in
Broome with a 250 dirt/trail bike on a carrier on the rear. When I was a child my old man had one made up for the back of the 60 series cruiser wagon and we used to carry a XR 100 there. They are very handy indeed, ours went straight into the towbar receiver.

I read about one that hooks onto the towbar and you hook the front wheel of the bike onto it and stick the bike in neutral then drive away.
Those style of carry racks would put alot of stress on the towbar that it might not be designed to handle. Bearing in mind that a 250 trail bike is 100kg plus.

Interesting.
How would that go with your towball weight? What does a bike weigh? If it was legal to fit it would have to weight less than 350kg inclluding the carrier as that is a Cruiser/Patrol max download weight.

The bike is 158kg (640cc KTM) & the carrier was rated to 500lb so that part is ok. I guess it comes down to the vehicle & towball.

Hi Mark
Guy's have been talking about these on www.thumpertalk.com. The biggest problem appears to be how low to the linkages may hang. Some say in the case of a factory fitted Dodge Ram towbar, it only allows a clearance of about 3 inches.
Food for thought before you import one.

I have one - got it made up to carry my son's TTR90. It fits into the 2" towbar reciever, and has tiedowns builtin. We carted the bike several thousand km's from
Adelaide to SW Qld and back, over some fairly poor dirt roads. The only problem was that it allowed stones thrown by the back tyres to hit the bike, but I fiited a huard which prevented this. The bike is not very heavy, and I lift it in one wheel at a time.
