80 series oil filter

I am doing my 1st oil change on our 7/94 4500 1fz-fe 80 sieries cruiser.The filter I was supplied is a z9,but the one I have just pulled off is a z418 and is much smaller.The larger z9 looks like a better size for the oil capacity and it also looks like it will fit,as it's sealing ring is the same diameter and thread size looks right.Appharently the oil filter was changed in the 96 model,but mine is well before this.which one is right?,Thanks

Whoever researched that filter table is obviously far more intellegent than my feeble mind,or perhaps had absolutley no idea what they were doing.

Parents have a 96 model 80 Series and it has a Z9 filter on it.

Thanks for the info.I just had a look at valvolenes online filter look-up, and it was quite simple,and yes,it says VO1,their equivolent to the z9.

Why invoke all the confusion, risk and peril when a genuine filter costs less than $50 for a six month service interval - false economy using doubtful/unsuited aftermarket !!!

The Z418 is the later technolgy and feautures high temperature paper.

The Z9 whilst a good filter, is now over 50 years old in design.

The oil capacity of a filter has little to due with its effeciency, its all about design and features such as the pleating and the media.

The call of course is yours, and the problem is that in the short term, it is hard to justify the additional expense.

Bit like using cheap oils, takes years for the shortfalls to manifest themselves.

The small ones minimise startup rattle of timing chain.....some 4.5's suffer from this.....either will do, i side with Cole, and use synthetic and small filter, but change them yearly (dont do 10,000 in a year)

We have a 94 4500 petrol, both filters fit fine, originally used the Z9 but now the Z418, as Andrew said the Z9 can cause timing chain rattle. What actually happens, being a larger filter the Z9 takes longer for the engine to stabilize oil pressure, the knocking noise is actually big end bearing knock as the oil pressure is required to support the bearings. It sounds disturbing and while years of these starts may not cause terminal engine damage, it no doubt will cause more wear than obtaining oil pressure much more quickly as the Z418 does.
