I would like to thank everybody that expressed concern & to those that offered assistance over the last couple of trying days, we were'nt looking too good yesterday with predictions that the fire would get to us sometime during the night, luckily the wind shifted to the south west & diverted the fire front away.
It now appears that the fire was deliberately lit!

Once again, thanks all & a huge thank you to all the firefighters that have been working so tirelessly!

G'day Shaker, I was just looking for your last post from th eother day to see how you are. I bet there is lots of people who don't know you but still worry and never posted regarding. Glad you are ok and the worst seems over.
Hard to understand why anybody would light fires like that where people loose everything....... makes you wonder what goes on in some heads.
Maybe more free needles needed????

Take Care

Spent a very frustrating day sitting beside the big red truck along with the five strike teams assembled, only to be told we weren't needed. Meanwhile all the time we watched the tower of smoke spewing into the sky not far away.

But this is a DSE fire... CFA back up only. Very frustrating.

Good to hear your okay though.

Been there done that, sat at stations over night waiting for a task with a fresh crew, only to get told to stand down, get back to station and be told to round up another crew to go back..

or interstate teams getting tasks, while locals sit on their chinas all day...

Would'nt they need to keep something in reserve just in case of a new outbreak? I'm not pretending to know anything about it Royce just asking a question.

Regards

Setting tasks for crews is a hard issue sometimes, and yes, you do need some in reserve.

But there are points where you realise that you dont need 12 crews sittin round at assembly points when they could be resting at home, or somewhere comfortable. Fair enough time is sometimes an issue with gettin crews back out there into the field, but its one of them things.

The thing that gets to people, some crews get all the work/tasks, while others get to sit with their finger wedges to the elbow doing nothing for hours.

Fair enough you have varying levels of experience in crews, which can hamper efforts too, from new members just done their training, to people with years experience, that know nothing (We had numerous of them in our station!), to people you would honestly trust with your life.

But if there was a large front out there, deploying the crews to do something active can be a better thing to do, even if its just mopping up.

Remember, trucks driving past houses causes alarm quite often, which can be a bad thing.

My Dad did 15yrs in local RFS, I did 13 yrs...

It got to a point, where since I became involved in State Training other brigades up to and including Crew Leader, I knew more than those above me in my station
LOL!
They didnt like that... Did all they could to make life hard, so I left. could be the fact I made them look stupid on many occasions due to their refusal to do any uptodate training. "I did that training 15 years ago, you cant teach me anything".. Then ask them the most basic questions, like

How much water the truck held, or what pump it had - usually shut them up instantly!

I live just up the road from you shaker , i heard a rumour yesterday that they caught a bloke lighting fires (dse worker) dont know how much truth there is in that tho. Also a friend of mine has a farm at willow grove he went to a meating yesterday and they were saying one of the choppers was flying over blue rock with a load of water and seen someone trying to start a fire and dumped water on it straight away, its hard to understand what goes thru some peoples heads.

Sorry guys, but I just get so frustrated with a system that treats 'sickos' with kid gloves and allows them to continually put innocent people at risk.

There has to be another way. Damned if I know what it is.

I red a book when I was a Teenager in Germany and the book writer wanted to keep all the bastards who lost the right living with the rest of us on an Island and use them as Organ donars.
Take lifes and give lifes back.....sounds good to me.

Was thinking about you yesterday Shaker. Good to hear things have improved for you and hope they only get better.

Weather has improved greatly in the SW of the state so hope they will for you. At least our fires we caused by lightening not by people
