Hi folks,
I have recently bought a second hand Barrett 550. It doesnt have selcall enabled.
Does anyone know who can enable this for me in
Adelaide (preferrably southern suburbs). I have been told you need a different mic as
well for selcall...is this so??
What should I expect to pay for this type of service??
TIA

Just my own experience. I assume you will be joining vks 737 so what you do is phone them and arrange your 4 digit selcall number. thuis can be your DOB eg 3010 otr the last 4 digits in your ph no or in my case tha last 4 digits of my mobile - I t all depends what nos are free. When you have established the no you seperate the 2 halves of your HF case (real easy just a few screws) and you will see 4 changeable things each one numbered from 0 to 9 you then dial in your sell call n. This will be confirmed when you turn the unit on as it will first show your sell call no -Hope this helps

On my 550 it is done in software, no taking the case apart. You will almost certainly need the programming S/W, a null modem cable and a laptop do it. You may be able to do it via the radios head depends on how the unit has had its S/W locked.
The S/W can be locked so it can't be programmed from the head which is the usual case. Or it can be unlocked so you can fully program it from the head.
When my 550 had the S/W locked I could still set up the selcall manually by using the reset key on the head. Changing the mic is optional I beleive.
Try reading the manual and see if this helps.
If you want any more help (I have the owners manual and the programmng S/W) PM me.
To find someone in Adelaisde to do it for you try the links page on the VKS 737 site.
Good luck!

Transceiver
Services 1387 Main North Road at Para Hills West Ph 82 85 4666 should be able to help you out. They are pretty good with anything HF.
Cost around $70 per hour. But you get quality service.
