I agree with Rambler. Whenever we plan a trip I get the maps and measure distances, etc. If I have trek notes I will still get the sheet map and mark the waypoints on it and the route.
Now that I have Oziexplore and NATMAP it is even easier.
Ozinefinder, there are two methods you can use apart from the one you are trying (ask someone else that has already done all the work).
1.Get a sheet map and a little measuring wheel (available at map shops) and calculate off the map scale.
2.Get a piece of paper and mark the distance along the track off the map and
check it against the scale at the bottom or side of the map sheet.
3.Use a mapping software.
