hi. i currently use small uhf sets for building site communication. is it possible to connect an aviation headset to a uhf set worn on my belt so that i can enjoy hearing protection and communication simultaneously?

I guess, if the impedance's on the mic. and the ear sets are the same, then go for it.

If not, and if you are handy, and as you work on building sites, we know you are, you could butcher up the headsets, and retro fit them into a good pair of ear muffs.

You can get noise cancelling headphones that also have an audio input. They work so well that you can hear a person whispering from abotu 10m away but then hear a gunshot right next to you muffled. I am not sure where to get them but they have different beands at safety stores. an example of what you are looking for.

Russ,

After using a set of aviation h'sets yesterday, for a couple of hours, reckon they would be too heavy for your sort of work. At least all day, and moving around.

The noise cancelling ear muffs are available at gunshops also.

Speaker/mikes are available that can take a plug in ear piece, that you could retro fit, as Wolfie suggested.

Also able to get boom mike with ear piece and head thingo.

Hooroo...
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

Russ,

not trying to be a party pooper (cause it sounds like a good idea) but you should check if the aviation headset meets the standards for your state Noise Management and Protection of Hearing at Work Code of Practice. Not all headsets do this.
You may be better looking at hearing protection that meets the standard and then maybe buy a radio earpiece, bone mike, throat moke style taht will fit underneath the earpieces. Most large radio makers have a selection. They are pretty comfy to wear (I have worn them for extended periods)
So although you may think that your modification is meetig the aim it may be possible that you are not achieving a recommended code of practice. If the actual headset you are using does meet the standards you are on a winner
If you do have to find another solution this place is good for browsing for ideas seton

There is also a good choice of links and a bit of info at Noise - workcover.vic link

Another issue is cost.
A half decent aviation headphone set cost between $350 and $500.
SWMBO just bought a new pair...sigh...

Cheers

this is what we use at the airports for ground handling, and during maint. work, headsets connected to motarola uhf sets , they work well, but the cost would be a major issue, the headsets are around $500, and the intrinsically safe radios are around $1000 ea. from memory.

no doubt you could fit a cheap set-up into some decent earmuffs like bilsoms etc. but as said make sure you cover your bases as far as eh&s goes.
