Gday all,,I have been the owner of three new Nissans over the past years, two Patrols and now the Navara. All these vehicles have Ps week seat belt retractors, every time I shut the door the seat belt buckle ends up jammed in the door unless you feed the belt back into the retractor. I have spoken to the dealer about it in the past but they have never been able to rectify the problem.
I have had a look to see if I can do anythig with it but they seem to be a sealed unit. Has anyone else found this a problem and, or has anyone found a fix for it?
Regards ,,,Nav.

My new Navara ST-X Dual Cab (dec 06) doesn't have this problem.
Not a lot of help to you - but it would seem Nissan have fixed it for the new model so you would have thought they could retro fit a fix as well.

I hate Nissan dealers.

I went to the dealer to see about the exact same problem. I wanted them to replace the retractor mechanism. They said they had to use some special cleaning kit first then if that didn't work order another mechanism in because they didn't have one in stock!! Funnily enough they ended up going through their proceedure and putting a new retractor on the spot! Didn't have one in stock my bottom. It's been in for a few months now and is starting to loose it's tension like the last. It wont be long and the buckle will be getting caught in the door again chipping of paint.

Leroy - sloppy seat belts.....a Nissan feature

Nav,
If its not retracting at all. Its faulty, They have to replace it because it may not work if u end up in an accident, and if they have it noted in their records that you complained it wasnt retracting after you had an accident, all hell would break loose. Personally, i would demand a replacement....oh and by the way, dont tamper with these belt retractors mate, they are very sensative and designed to save lives. I used to pull em apart way back when they were dismantable and we used to re tension them so they would retract, but the ones fitted in cars today should not be touched in anyway.

Yes it's ridiculous - same in the Troopy (2002). You would have thought they would've updated things by now especially in regard to seat belts - better mechanisms have been around for bloody years.

Penny pinching wherever they can is the name of the game.

Not the answer to your question but the driver's seatbelt on my GQ, when driving on roughish dirt roads, or on a steep incline, locks and is unable to be unlocked.

If it's too tight and can't unlock it I have to stop on flat level surface in order to unravel the seatbelt again. Either that or undo belt.

Seems like Nissan need to improve seatbelt retractors. The sort of thing that needs to be up to scratch.

Yep, our 2000 Pathy too! Complained at 1st service only to be told it needed cleaning! Same cr@p each time we complained. Don't think it would be on record as with another booboo on 'their' part had been removed from their 'puter when we queried it against our service statement... they had started working on our vehicle on another Pathy's job sheet! And admitted it!
Maybe, if we all take along a copy of this post at next service, something might be done. Or send copy to head office with complaint?

I have the same problem with my 04 suzuki jimny. The seat belt has to be manhandled back into place, abit like an elderly relative. Dealership dosn't care.
So i have dryed my eyes, and have gotten over it, just.

I have the same problem with my GU.

Have found it can be alleviated by cleaning the belt. Did try all types of solvents without any success. The only method that worked was to fully extend the belt and hit it with a high pressure spray. Once all the grime was removed it worked OK but below a standard I would accept.

My Mitsubishi Express has the same drama......... and Mitsubishi wouldn't do anything about it either.

I just live with it. There are better things to worry about IMHO

But our Nissan one (GQ) is fine. The belt that was there when SWMBO parked it upside down a couple of years back held her firmly in place and saved her from getting thrown around the cabin, or worse.

THAT'S whats important!

Just my opinion

Cheers

Yeah the old Mitsi's!! I can't believe how SLACK they are. I used to drive an old 1989 Mitsi Express, then I moved to a new job and the first thing the new boss did was buy me a brand new van! I thought, beauty! so I got (at the time) at BRAND NEW 2003 Mitsi Express. IT WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE 1989 ONE EXCEPT IT HAD TAPE PLAYER INSTEAD OF AN AM/FM RADIO! Right down to the seatbelt jaming in the bloody door! I would have thought after nearly 25 years of building a vehicle of the eact same design that they would have fixed the friggin seatbelt!!!

But back on topic the GU I also drove for the same work on a regular basis always jamed the seatbelt in the door also, it had only done about 30k.

Odly enough, the yota has the exact opposite problem! Especially with the back seats, damn it it's a pain in the but, it continually locks the frggin seatbelts, even if you are on the SLIGHTEST angle. A regular pain in the but when you pull over for a piss stop and the kids get out while the car is parked on the shoulder, get back in and none of the bloody seatbelts will come out!! The older one's ok, cos he can put it on once we get moving, but with Steph, she's in a booster seat, so you have to creep the car forward and try and find a level spot then fart ass around with it to try and free it. The front's aren't so bad (probally a little more worn) but can still do it from time to time. Never had a problem with them retracting and thats on an 11 year old vehicle! ;-) I'm not sure if they replcae the seatbelts on the imports when they register them here in Oz, maybe they are only half the age of the vehicle, or maybe they are origional and the japs just make better seatbelts than the ozzy's!

Had the same problem on my 99 Pathy - but there isan easy fix!

Clean the mount on the pillar - you will be surprised how much gunk is built up there.

I then sprayed the belt with silicon spray and let it dry. Retracts perfectly now.

Exactly, it's generally the guide on the pillar that gets body oils on it and causes the drama.

I was told a few years ago they are all so weak on retract these days because otherwise people complain they are too tight across their chest, (especially women).
You can't win!
Just have to live with it. I often intentionally lock mine as I like it tight- and the tighter it is the safer it is..
