Had a chance to use my El Cheepo Chinese 9000 lb winch last weekend. Away for the weekend with a heap of the friends from my RFS Brigade. One of the Guys in a X trail towing a CT got stuck on a steep section of loose stones.
The winch worked like a charm and with the fronteria motor running just above idle, the battery was unaffected after a 5 min winching operation. It did have about a 5 min break in the middle as I had to remove the snatch block as it was no at the right angel.
So after one job. I am happy with it so far

Hi Troll 81

They were on special from Repco about 6 – 8 mths ago.
They are rated at 9000 lbs and were $799 with a 3 year warranty.
I got mine very cheep as Repco had sent me a $100 gift voucher because I gave them a hard time about an in dash DVD player they had advertised without having the stock. (A lot of people on this forum did the same.)
I went in to have a look at the 6500 lb they had for $499 and when they brought it out it was a 9000 lb, so I gave them the voucher + $399 and walked out.
It fitted straight onto my bull bar 7 took about 2 hrs maybe 3 to do all the work.
I did have a fork lift to hold the bar as I worked on the bolts, (did it at work on the Sat when there was on one there) but if you have a few strong mates, it’s an easy job.

A mate of mine has had teo of those winches fail on him. First one spooled out on his driveway but wouldn't spool back again. Repco replaced it without any drama. The second one just wouldn't work at all. He got his money back and bought a Magnum.
Maybe he was just unlucky. I managed to break my Warn so nothing in life is certain.

IMHO winches are something you dont want failing on you, so its worth buying something that you know will work.

what did ya break on warn?

Ouch that looks expensive.......MD what was done to the winch to cause that sort of damage?
Was it abused in any way or just heavily loaded?
From the photo it looks like the mounting holes are vertical not forward into a bar. Was it mounted correctly?
Cheers Craig.........

Hi,
To me,and I claim to no expert..it looks as thought the winch was mounted incorectly..the reo of the winch..the thick part of the mount should be facing the line of pull..the way this winch is set up looks like it was set up to shear..I feel there should be more instruction on how to mount a winch properly to aviod this type of thing..I have a chinese jobby and so far so good..most things these days come from the big shop...China..when you consider how crappy japanese stuff was a decade or so ago once they truely get there act together, well were starting to see it now..by the way if it was me I would send pictures to the manufacturer for further product development..feed back might bring them up to speed faster..as this failerore could have been a fatality.

JD although its mounted down into the bar that may not neccessarily be wrong. The winch in a 100 series ARB bar is mounted very similar although it's most important to run the cable underneath the drum not over the top.
Cheers Craig.........

I bunched the cable up on one side, operator error ; ( and the tie rod snapped the two end plates. I replaced both tie rods and the two plates cost $200 for parts and a six pack for labour. Gave me an excuse to pull it apart and fit plasma rope. : )

what i find funny is that you got a Magnam winch .. This is made in???? China lol

Warn get there winches from ????? you guess lol

I think the trick with winches is to spend some time water proofing them and good maintenance

G'Day All,

As for fitting......

there was a thread some time back about a guy who burnt out two new winches in two week-ends, think they were Brawn, each time going back to claim warranty. By the third one the dealer thought that something must be wrong. Turned out that when mounting the winch there was a slight twist accross the mounts, enough to cause the problems when under load, and the rest is history. They took great care when mounting the third winch that all was square and no problems from then on.
