Anyone want to check this out in WA at Lat = -30.516354; Long = 121.336956
Might be a good Easter trek exercise. It's out Davoe's way - Kalgoorlie region.

http://digg.com/apple/iPod_Advertisement_From_Space

The ad, which depicts Apple’s flagship iPod product has been constructed on the site of an abandoned mineral mine in remote western Australia. It has been in development for almost two years since Apple’s founder Steve Jobs aquired the location during a game of poker with (the late) Australian publishing and gaming tycoon Kerry Packer."

Oops,

A better link is this one direct to the image
Google maps site

The link in the first posting goes to a discussion list where they are wondering if it's for real. Just imagine, you could put them all out of their misery :-)

It's just a tailings dam.

It looks like the upper cell is active and the lower cell is drying out.

The tailings dam is where the waste material from a processing plant (mill) at a mine-site is stored.

When I fly home from work, I can check out the co-ords and try to work out which mine it is. Just looking at the photo, the mine looks active still.

Pretty standard stuff for a minesite.

Cheers

Stephen

It's on the Black Flag to Ora Banda Road - and on the 250k maps I have with Ozi it says it's a tailings dump and the Paddington Mine is adjacent.
It's not far from the corner of the Broad Arrow to Kalgoorlie road.

The person that started the idea/hoax/cooincidence does say it is an old mine site so it isn't immediately ruled as a hoax.

Personally I'm with your theory! .... but just imagine ...... :-)

Ill agree on the tailings dump, my first impression was a salt pan for salt harvesting, but seemed a little small.

Anyhoo I reckon it would be some sort of tailings pond etc.

Yeah, it doesn't look to be Paddington (which is just sth and east of this location).

According to my info it is a tailings dam that may have been associated with the now abandoned Gudarra mine (or possibly the Mt Corlac mine - which I've never really heard of). This means the photo is probably quite old 'cause in the photo the dam is obviously active and has not been rehabilitated.

There is a possibility that the dam could be associated with Paddington (approx 5km away). Paddinton was in operation in mid last year, although I suspect it closed in late 2005 (it has been going to close down for ages now).

I note that on my LandSat 250K maps - both cells are active.

In a satellite image I downloaded from NASA, the dams aren't even there!!

It'll make a good story when someone goes out and snags the location (for all you mad keen geocachers). It should be easy to get to just off the Goldfields Hwy north of Kal. Maybe Davo you take a quick trip to check it out!!

Cheers and good hunting.

Oh Davoe, where's your imagination?

Pretend your overseas and all you do is think about your iPod. Sitting in a big city somewhere, never been to the countryside, let alone slept in it.

Then someone posts this really really convincing story and even finds a picture to go with it.

AND it's in 'very remote Western Australia'... oooohhhh, must be true, strange things happen in deserts......

So, is anyone gunna drive past and see if Steve Jobs is supervising work, or young Packer is leaning on a shovel??? Maybe not eh..

It's supposed to look like one.

Some of the comments on the blog site say the 'iPod from Space' - link in my first posting - is still being developed, hence the only minor similarity and they also say it's going to be launched soon as a special ad or something. Frankly, it's a bit of a joke me thinks, but I WAS amused to find reference to WA and wondered if anyone felt like checking it out, then responding back to the blog site with a complete 'look you idiots, it's a tailings pond' response.

Davoe, some people get right into their iPod's, they're tragics. The smooth corners, the way the centre wheel works so nicely, the lovely sound, the huge capacity, the feel in your hands, the sense of 'I've got an iPod not one of those other crappy MP3 players' when you're on the crowded train. Not that I am one of those or anything ........

No worries, perhaps Ben Spoon will head up by himself. He'll have to get used to not having you around.

Now you're coming to the city, you'll be able to get an iPod and be on the train knowing you've got a better MP3 player than the body next to you, all those hundreds of people on one train, all heading off to work in an office with no view of the sky ..........

Sorry mate, shouldn't do that to you :-)
