Low pitch whistle GU

Our Missan patrol 3 L has since we have owned it a low pitch whistle which you can hear at low revs when accelerating. I stood in the driveway and watched the wife drive away with very small throttle input, and the noise was quite noticeable. It is akin to the pitch of a siren but much softer.

Does anyone else notice this noise from their GU?

Hoping it is not an airleak on the intercooler or turbo.

I thought it would be, but funny how it is really noticeable at those revs in the Nissan, and not on similarly equiped vehicles. I've heard quite a few turbo pertol vehicles in my time and none sound like that. I wonder is it something peculiar to the Nissan turbo?

If it is a hole in the casting or somewhere then I think you will hear two whistles. The usual turbo whistle and the leak. That is what we get from our F250 anyway.

So do you hear one or to whistles?

If it is just the one then I would think it is normal.
Best answer would be a trip to a Nissan dealer and fire up another one for comparison.

Thanks all, I have plenty available for comparison without a trip to Nissan, it may be just that my attention was drawn to it this morning, and it is quite normal.

Cheers

The TD5 has this as well, but it's the centifuge or centrifical filter (TD5 has 2 oil filters) that causes the whistle.

A good idea is to replace the standard intercooler hoses with stainless steel or poly ones as i'm doing on the Disco, as these last alot longer and don't distort when hot.

Mine's the same, (lightly) sounds like a siren/low whistle when at lower revs.
A friend of ours' 2.8 patrol sounds similar, as does another 3 ltr in our club.

Same here! 2003 3.0 GU.

I spent the first 20 minutes I drove it looking in the rear view mirror for the ambulance...

" spent the first 20 minutes I drove it looking in the rear view mirror for the ambulance"

LOL.... now that I think about it, my bride has heard ambo's on several occasions since we turbo'd the GQ...... perhaps it's the whistle she can hear!

Cheers

David,

I bet Roachie has not got one of them. It would be the only thing he has not got.

Actually.................

Wayne, since fitting the new, bigger Schwitzer hair-dryer, I often drive with the rear passengers side window down, so I can listen to the turbo spool up and the note from the 3" outlet, which is off to the side just behind the rear wheel!!!

It serves to ease my pain when i see my Credit Card statement every month!!! hahaha

The only other improvement would be a 6.5 Chev V8....if I got one of them I could get a small amount of my money back by selling the stereo system......there is NO WAY I would need to listen to music (even Slim Dusty) if I had that purrrr, leading to a burble, leading a roar....coming from under the bonnet. I can't believe Bilbo is gunna spend $$$$ trying to get sound deadening stuff fitted to his new beast.....what a waste!!!

Not sure about aircon, as it is always on.

It is definitely a smooth whistle
