Waiting ...waiting....

As I sit here waiting for the puter to download 4 regions from DiscoverOz to the Meridian Colour, I'm thinking that it certainly is a lot of bother to get something working that should be made that way anyway.
What is it with technology that you have to become "techno savvy" when all you want is to use something , not go back to Uni to learn how to switch it on.
Having struggled to get Oziexplorer, natmaps and a few others working with my GPS and lappy, I now find myself doing this. I've been spoilt !
Oh why 4 regions ? Because even with the 128 meg card it will only allow me to download 4 regions. Yes I know I probably need a card programmer or something but why should I need to buy more and more? Yes for some GPS you can buy with the good stuff there but .....and its isn't exactly bargain basement price tags either.
It's a bit like buying a car and being handed the steering wheel. "Oh you'll need a few more things ............"
I'm hardly a tech Luddite but I do think that technology can be the greatest time waster since the TV was invented :)

With TV one sits in front of it like a zombie to afraid to speak less we interupt.. technology that requires interaction and perhaps the use of a little gray matter is perhaps not quite so bad :-)

G'day 'Loosie. You should be able to get half of Australia on a 128 meg card. If you make up your regions of a maximum of 16 meg units which is about the maximum the Meridians will handle and then make them up into states. I forget what you had to name them as mine was pinched but they can be written straight onto your SD card by a card reader like in so many printers these days. NSW will probably be on four 16 meg parts and probably Victoria too with the intensity of the data. I do remeber I had to rename all the map files though....

You shoudn't just load the portions of Australia or the states as a whole I remember.

Hi John, don't have a card programmer and I'm not buying one for a one off job for someone else.
But thanks for the post. You deserve a medal :))

Don't get carried away with medals yet I gave my manual and the CDRom to the insurance company to show I deserved to get my replacement so I am working from memory. I may have a manual copy round somewhere on a hard disk if I looked hard ;-)

For the data transfer you may be able to speed up the transfer rate above 4800kbs if you wanted to. A bit like my experience of a 300kbs modem twenty years ago but I didn't have to download too much. Just hack the disk so I reckoned I knew what I had to do without the manual.

Don't forget your states can be made up of several (max)16 meg regions and you can change states at the border off the card sub-menu.

Footie ,

Patience is a virtue . Rome was not built in a day . A watched pot never boils .

But in saying that Footie , he who hesitates is lost except those who look before they leap .

That is to say , so to speak , as it were . All things being equal , a level playing field is needed at the end of the day - argueably . I mean , if you took up the ball and ran with it , and somebody had moved the goal posts ( are you a team player Footie ) you would be behind the eight ball .

Just keep your nose to the grindstone , your eye on the ball and your ear to the ground .

Willie .

And there's no F in tomato .

But really , Footie needs man to understand how important it is to focus , to lead from the front , taking each day as it comes in a way that makes him proud to be Australian .

Apparently one of our banks (God love 'em) is try to take 'U' out of Queue.

Mr Loose has to learn to take his technology one download at a time and not get ahead of himself.

. . . and where my daughter is concerned the IS an 'F' in tomato, as everytime I put one on the plate in front of her she gets that exasperated look that only women can and I can see her mind ticking over - How many times do I have to tell you, daddy, I don't like effin tomatoes.

I think , at this point in time , we should move on to better things - turn over a new leaf as it were . Seek new challenges , new horizons , set some new goals for ourselves.

What do you think Wombat - are you a man or a marsupial ? Does your personal trainer think your up to the challenge ?

Mentally or physically ?

I can see a few spots on the hindquarters that could be scars . I can't help noticing yopu are wearing shoes on your back feet , but have bare front feet . Is this a fashion trend , or didn't they have your size ?

Speaking of all this expensive technology has anyone tried scanning a $50 note - purely for evaluation purposes, just to see if you can get the colour right...then with a sharp scalpel cut away the clear bit and put it in the change slot at a car wash and see if it works??? Beats the hell out of spending hours at a lathe trying to machine up brass $2 fakes which cost $4 to make...

Fawlty, just remember that if its profitable it's taxable. And if it's that profitable, it's certainly illegal.
I suspect that you wouldn't be the first to try !
