G'day Rod,

Big River is one of perhaps only a couple of vehicle camping spots in the Goulburn River National Park (the other being Spring Gully.) Parks classify it as 4wd, but that maybe only after rain.

Goulburn River National Park is about 2 1/2 hrs east of Dubbo off the Golden Hwy, 35 k's sth of Merriwa.

cheers.

bushfix,

If WP Zoo stands for Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo NSW, then there is a bush camp (no facilities) at the bird hide just sout of Forbes on the Newell Hwy. As the name suggests there is a Bird Hide and water hole here, but it is about an hour and a quater's drive south of Dubbo.
Hope this helps.
Trevor.

G'day Trevor,

ah yes, my other critical criteria, "NO FACILITIES". Forgot to mention that. Thanks very much for that info, will do some research indeed. May help if we finish late at the zoo.

yours in camping,

Jeremy.

c.y.a.e.o. MM?

or for others that aren't experts in decoding obscure initials; "can you also expand on MM"?

MM is short for Member Message. Members can message between each other without giving out email address if you don't want to.

Cheers Trevor.

Bushfix,

Ponto Falls is between Wellington and Dubbo, on the Macquarie and a great place for a free camp. If you're heading toward Dubbo from Wellington, watch out for the signs about 5k out of Wello, on the left,

regards

Andrew, thanks mate,

despite the "KN PRICKLES (two tarps under the tent for protection) the place was beaut, picturesque, free with no facilities but best for our need at the time: close to the WP Zoo. We did not leave Big River til 0915, left WP Zoo at around 1540 and made it to Ponto with enough daylight to set up and cook dinner. But GEEEEEZ it was cold in the morn.

Thanks again Andrew from our mob.

btw, finished with a tootle across the twelve mile to the bridle track. Mary Flynn was our target but the nights were getting too cold for the Wife so we just did some low range stuff down there and satisfied my kids' need to chuck rocks in water. :)

and there was no water for 200m either side of the turon crossing.
