Not having a bitch or anything, but the Pick competition that I had a guess at was correct ,ie Pondana
Ruins in SA. Seems as though it had to be spelt with double N, which from all of my reserch is incorrect spelling.
Can anyone confirm this?

I may have actually jumped in a bit soon......
I was looking at
Pondanna Outstation (double n) but I note that there is also a Pondana
Dam (single n). The GPS co-ords given in the pick the place results look to be for the latter. The co-ords for Pondanna Station are 32 28.298S 135 27.406E
Its only for fun. I guess it has served it's purpose that I now know about 2 more locations in this big country!

...and the last
pic was Ruby
Gorge Nature Park OR
Ruby Gap Nature Park as gazzetted on the maps! NOT Ruby Gap
Gorge...who has ever known itas such?
Maybe a little checking is in order, or a few standard rules; otherwise a
pic. could be submitted with a bogus title (or even one wrong word) & guessing could go on forever.

This is happened before, some people got quite irate.
But its all in fun , and it does have to be the same spelling as posted. Correct or not. It all evens out in the end. Win some lose some.
If you win, something for free, if you dont win, nothing lost but some time.
There is always the choice not to play, I see it like some say tomatoe some say tomatoe.......... hhmmm doesnt quite work when you type it ! : )

What exactly are some of you lot whining about? "Maybe a little checking is in order"
Ruby Gap
Gorge is an actual place, is recorded as the official name of the place in the picture and is marked on the 250K maps (and others) as such.
From Geoscience Australia Name Search
RUBY GAP
GORGE
STATE: NT
CUSTODIAN: NT
FEATURE CODE: GORG (Valleys & Depressions)
STATUS: Official
LATITUDE: 23º 27' S [Decimal Degrees -23.450º]
LONGITUDE: 135º 00' E [Decimal Degrees 135.000º]
EASTING: 500000 [UTM zone 53, GDA 94]
NORTHING: 7407000
FEATURE NUMBER: NT18147
100K MAP No.: 5851
The actual
gorge is in the
Ruby Gap Nature Park as mentioned...but a picture of the park would of course cover a bigger area and would probably be best achieved from an aircraft. Have fun (and learn at the same time) - thats whats its all about
Happy
easter
Cheers

From GeoScience Australia Place Names Search
PONDANNA OUTSTATION SA HMSD (Built Structures) Official -32° 28' 135° 27' -
PONDANNA WATER SA SPRG (Bores,Tanks,Waterpoints) Official -32° 27' 135° 29'
PONDANA
DAM SA
DAM (Dams & Locks) Official -32° 19' 135° 50'
and in WA....
PONDANA WA HMSD (Built Structures) Official -31° 34' 125° 12' -
The actual
ruins do not show up in the search and it could be argued that dont have an "official" name (according to Govt Name database search above anyway) but as mentioned are located close to the Pondana
Dam. It does appear that from looking at the photo (the only actual info available to me) the
ruins are spelt with two Ns. I can find no information to suggest this is wrong. Keep in mind that Pondana
Dam while "official" may be spelt incorrectly also and should have two Ns??
Cheers

Exactly Greg - We do research the
places and compare it with our
Places database (extracted results from Topo 250) and GA's
places name and also the state based
places name databases like GNR (Geographical Names Register).
Pondanna Ruins are 100% correct with two N's. If you open up the Place via the image in the comp (or here
http://www.exploroz.com/Places/Show.asp?pwp=76178) - you will be taken to the ExplorOz Place name database and see the 9 images from
Pondanna Ruins the image at the top says it all and is here for you reference:
Ruby Gap
Gorge is the Topo 250 place name and also the GA place name - I cannot get it more correct than this. However I understand I lived in
Alice Springs for several years and it was always called Ruby Gap - But the official Place name is Ruby Gap
Gorge.
Yes we have in the past had some problems with the names but hey it is meant to be fun - I am the one that gives away the prizes, I spend the hours on the loading of data and validation - Hey I even make a mistake or two. But if you want me to stop wasting my time and giving you the comp then I will just save the effort and turn it off!

Im with David on this, it is meant to be fun and i think that some people just take it all to seriously.
I worked in mining exploration for many years and there are many different ways of spelling different
places and there are also many different names for
places which made it hard at times to find the right spot but i didnt go to the geo's and say you have spelt it wrong and im not happy.
Maybe we need to build some bridges and get over the spelling thing.
Have a great
easter

David saved me going to the trouble of loading up my photo of the sign which I sent him when I sent the pics in.
I've bitched about this in the past but I've come around to David's way of thinking. I also gave a commitment to take some pics specifically for the comp on my last trip.
The big surprise was that someone guessed the
pic from
Lake Gairdner in 2 guesses! In hindsight it would probably would have been guessed more wrongly if I'd loaded up a
pic of one of the DLRA cars or bikes, seeing as how everyone I talked to before or after going kept referring to my trip to Lake Eyre!
Oh
well.

I was up there in 2004 and thought Lake Gardiner was worth a shot seeing the previous
pic was just around the corner!
