After doing a heap of night driving over the past few weeks I'm looking into upgrading the output of my Hella 4000's. Had a good search through the archives and found a bit of useful info out but was after some 'model specific' stuff.

Q1. Is there a replacement globe available for the Hella 4000 that makes a noticable improvement?

Q2. If so, are there any downsides to them such as durability, wiring requirements etc? I used to use 130W inserts in my 75 series and only got a few months out of them before they failed so went back to standard 100W.

Q3. Is it worth replacing the headlight globes in my 105 series Landcruiser while I'm at it? If so, with what?

Q4. What type of globe is used in the Hella 4000's (H2, H3 etc)?

I'm familar with the Lightforce spotties, prefer to stick with the Hella's if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Any spotties can be upgraded to HID. Can be pricey though!

I have tried those Philips +50% globes in my Cibie spotties but found that they were worse than the original, but they may work in a better quality unit like the 4000. Globe I think is a H4.

The headlights in 100 series cruisers is reported to be one of the best made (quoted by 4WDmonthly) so I would recommend a globe and loom upgrade for these. I put +50% in my Patrol headlights and found a reasonable difference, I'm not sure why it didn't work in my spotties.

Cheers,

Muzz

I always thought so, until I got some. I got them for nothing cos one had a smashed lense, which cost me $140 to replace. (cibie oscar. 1 spot. 1 semi spread )

I found myself looking at better globes fairly quickly, which didn't work. I have not done a lot of extended night driving out of the city for a while, so I havn't worried about it, but a couple of trips coming up we will leave friday night.

I did think about buying some Super Oscar's but the cost has always put me off, so I've been waiting for lightforce to fix the "unscrew the body" problem, but it looks as though they have no intention of changing.

So back to the good old Rallye 4000 it is then.

What is the unscrew body problem?

You mean the fact that you can adjust them from pencil to spot by turning them?
or that its the way you change the globes?

Yes I know it's how you adjust them.

Yes it's also how you change the bulb.

Yes it's also how scumbags steal the best part of your lightforce, leaving two plastic stumps with globes !!!!!!!

you can upgrade them to HID's for about $400 or if you want more than 35watts get the 50 watt inserts, not sure how much they are,

Hi,
the HID conversion is 35 wats each at globe and the ballast consumes another 7w=42 watts per bulb. The output of hid (xenon gas discharge) is similar number of lumens (amount of light) as a 100 w halogen bulb. The colour is different on hid (more white) and will help you see further. The hid also runs much much cooler. You can almost touch it, but dont do it as the voltage can be up to 35000 v.
Putting 130 watt bulbs in any spotlight can often result in less lumens due to voltage drop due to increase in resistance from higher current draw. You need to make sure your wiring is not dropping voltage under load. Test it with light on from the battery to the positive terminal at bulb. You should drop less then 0.5 v, and less is better.
The best (economical) thing to do is get an additional set of spotlights if you dont have enough light.
cheers

You drink the carton and a flagon of Stones then I'll swap you 2 x Hella 4000's and 4 x rectangular IPF 130W for a set of 240mm Lightforce HID's.
