Being a self funded retiree, having owned a buiness and employing people, paid a lot of tax over the years since I left school, I applied for a seniors health care card, the card arrived with the following letter saying that my adjusted income must be less than $50,000 if single, $80,000 if a couple, or $100,000 if you are separated due to ill health, respite care, or GET THIS because your partner is in GOAL!!!!, what is this country coming to?..............so the thing I now have to decide is, do I get the wife to do the crime and time and get free board and lodging plus get paid while in goal?

The Government has just given you a no tax break on your superannuation and you still want something for nothing. One of the greatest things about Australian is the desire to share the wealth with people who can least afford things. Sure there are people who will abuse the system but it it there to help those who can least help themselves. John Kennedy once said something like "ask not what my country can do for me but what can I do for my country". I'll step down from the soapbox now.

Leaving aside arguments about the kind of learned helplesness that a welfare state can induce, the Government has not given Mike a 'no tax break' on his super. It has simply decided not to tax him a second (and in some cases, a third) time on his super if he is over 60.

Hardly seems like 'something for nothing' for a self funded retiree.

Not paying 15% tax is still a tax break. The situation a few years ago had us taxed four times with the Super Contributions Tax for "High" income earners. There are now a lot of opportunuties for people to minimise their tax.

"or GET THIS because your partner is in GOAL!!!!"

I knew Guus Hiddink was casting around, but how does this affect your seniors card?

Seriously though, it is not the time of life that you need to be dicked around having worked hard to fund yourself in retirement.

Matt.

He didn't say he was dicked around. He said the card arrived in the mail. He went on to say there was an attached letter and as far as I can gather he was commenting on how people with a partner in gaol have a higher income threshold.

Weird I know, but he got the card like he applied for.

My next question is about this bit "so the thing I now have to decide is, do I get the wife to do the crime and time and get free board and lodging plus get paid while in goal?"

If you got the card, why would you be contemplating getting the wife to do a crime???
Or were there other benefits (other than the health care card) mentioned in the letter you could have got if your income was within those thresholds?

But about your original post "this will get your blood boiling", I agree, it's a little weird to have concensions based on whether a partner is in gaol!

We self funded fools are a pain for the Govt. They can't rip much in the way of taxes off us and we still vote. What a bl**dy cheek we have !
I'm sick of not being ancient enough to have any cards, hell I look old enough (do I ever !) and am retired ! (medically somewhat early) No rebates, carsds or freebies etc.
If you cut me, do I not bleed ? etc etc :))
Once upon a time your taxes were supposed to pay for your old age pension. (strange concept in these days of I'm all right Jack)
The Govt has sold of public assets, refused to index the threshold of tax, and shifted the burden of social services back onto the community (user pays) while letting infrastructure run waaay downhill (eg hospitals, Medicqare GAP payments etc)
Then they have the cheek to say hey we're so good this year that we can return some of your taxes ..of course we'll decide who to.
And we don't even raise an eyebrow.

And to all those weenies who rekkon I'm just an old whinger, remember that Grey Power isn't a washing powder!

I think some of you might have missed the point, what I was saying was, that if you are a law abiding couple you can earn up to $80,000..... BUT..... if you OR your partner is in GOAL you can earn up to $100,000 so where is the logic or justice in that?

It sure isnt the intention of the NWO handlers who control the finance system that any should have a reasonable amount upon which to live.
They can crash any market they wish whenever they wish so until then have a bit under the pillow or front seat & enjoy!
Our next PM could well be that known member of the Council of Foreign Relations & money men PC (not politically correct!)
We are not intended to enjoy our lives. Malcolm Fraser even said so, so I guess he was right!
