I currently have a GQ Patrol with a corroded head. I have been informed by a nissan dealer that to replace just the head and machine the block will cause problems and therfore I am better off with a new motor, (very expensive) I am desperate for any advice from anyone that has had simalar probs with this model. GQ RX 2.8lt td. Any info greatly appreciated. Also names of any good mechanics in
Perth that can do the job.

Why not replace it with a second hand 4.2 diesel?

jason, get a 4.2 TD or chevy 6.5, much cheaper in the long run. Good luck

Believe it or not, the swapping of a 2.8 motor to 4.2 motor is far more difficult than replacing a 2.8 with 6.5 Chevy V8.
I asked this question at Brunswick Diesels when I had my 2.8 swapped to Chev 6.5. The Chev is easy by comparison.
A recon head is around $3500.00. A secondhand head is about $1800.00 - no guarantees on 'em.
If you really like the car and you want to keep it and it's in good nick - get a V8 Chev put in it. It'll change yer life.
Mine's an absolute cracker of a truck.
If you want to just replace the head, then try Brunswick Diesels. Yes, they do the Chev conversion but they do a lot of other diesel repair work as
well. They'll have an old 2.8 in the
shop somewhere or they'll know where you can get one. They are a great mob to deal with.

Bilbo, with all due respect Brunswick have a vested interest in pointing in the Chev direction. The 2.8 to 4.2 conversion is pretty common and all parts are available from Nissan or the wreckers. Engine mounts can be cut off a wrecked 4.2 and re-used, I've even seen one where the original 2.8 ones were still in place and the owner just adapted from those. The gearbox has to be changed and probably the crossmember but again those are cheaply available from the wreckers. If it was a Yota gearbox that would be more expensive but the Nissan ones just don't break as a rule and as a consequence they sell cheaply.
Depending on gearing requirements you can either stay with 4.6 ratio diffs or sell them (easily as the competition guys want them) and change them to either 4.1 or 4.3.
It certainly won't be a 20K+ excercise that the Chev is.
Regards Andrew.

Andrew,
With all due respect, I agree with you about "vested interests". However, the engine bay wiring is completely different between the 4.2 and the 2.8. In most engine swaps, it's the wiring and electronics that are the biggest nightmare and often sensors have to be changed. But finding out wihich is the right bit is the problem. Changing engine monuts, rewelding stuff and swapping boxes and diffs is the easy part. I used to do it myself as a younger man.
I had a 4.2 Nissan for 11 years and it was a good, solid but slow engine. I'd rather have the Chev if I was doing a complete changeout of the engine. My 2.8 Patrol was bought with a blown motor, at a very cheap price, so the $20k changeout was a bargain.
