Has anyone seen or had an idea of a water heater/heat exchanger that
you can just throw on a single burner? Maybe a copper coil etc.

I did some research a while back on this type of water heater. I found one in a Camping World catalogue, when I tried to purchase it they claimed that it did not pass Australian safety standards so was never actually stocked. It was the exact same unit that is available from this site
http://www.zodi.com/ I contacted Zodi but they don't have an Australian distributor but they do sell direct over the web.

1/2 slab, there use to be a company in
Townsville that manufactured a similar system called the ' SCUD ', it's an aluminium coil that is housed in an round aluminium case & placed over the gas burner, i saw it at the
Brisbane caravan & camping show a couple of years ago, so i am not sure if it is still around, you could try ringing a couple of camping stores in
Townsville, they may know, regards, Dave.

It was from
Cairns actually. Geo Pickers Camping & Canvas (also in
Cairns) stock them.

These units are dangerous
if the water boils there is a real risk of scalding or steam forced thru the shower.
if you are going to use a gas ring warm your water in a drum and buy the cheap shower pump
helton now stock these units and they are
dam good water at 9 ft head

These comments are with reference to a copper pipe on a gas burner not to a proper gas water heater

I built a shower heater for around $150. Consists of a 20litre tank with a coil of copper tube inside. Tank is fitted under vehicle & the tubing runs along the chassis rail & joins into the heater system on the engine.
Another heater tap is used which is turned on while driving half an hour before stopping to
camp. This was suitable for 4 people to have a nice shower up to an hour after stopping. Dont need engine running. Dont rely on sunshine & dont have to light a fire. I can supply more info if you are interested. Just email me ok. Lee.

Use 3/8 copper tube. Coil it, starting with the smallest possible diameter. It can sit on a cast iron gas ring. Use one of those cheap shower kits from Super cheap. The hose pushes directly onto the 3/8 copper. You will probably have to cycle the water using a large (20 litre) bucket/container to get it to a reasonable temperature. This however can be dangerous as you can't regulate the water temperature. Also you will need to fix the copper coil to the burner somehow.

Thanks guys, those helton products seem pretty damn good for the
price. At under $100 bucks its not worth the stuffin' about with dangerous
home-made ideas.

I am setting up a shower to go on a ring burner I have cut an air cond condenser out of a hz holden in half (length wise) and soldered up the end with one of the fittings of the othe half)with your normal 12v shower kit it heats up almost instantly and not to hot (two different temps depending on witch way up you put it on the flame.
I am now in the prosses of fitting a 12v gas cut off from a gas conversion car wired to the gas and pump so you have to have the pump running to have the gas on and when you switch off the pump the gas automaticaly switches off .
Hope this helps.
