I am about to purchase from North America a Magellan Meridian Platinum GPS and would appreciate advice as to what accessories people consider essential &/or useful.

For my purpose I was considering a car mounting and cigarette lighter plug.

What else would you recommend and why?

www.mall24-7.com is where I got one from. 50% off the Aussie price...

NO PROBLEMS!!!

all arrived on time in one piece.. you can contact me off list if you would like more info.

Get Magellan only from USA as they are the only ones YOU (personallY) can change basemaps on.. The basemaps are free on the magellan meridian group on yahoogroups.

Yes Scott please do tell...
also inc their emails I'd like to know about it too, as I still deal with the shop regularly.

I know of 15 people now that have used them, and have GPS in their hands with all accessories..

Try a seach in www.mysimon.com and enter magellan, the site is a shopping service with hundreds of online merchants competing.

I use this service in the USA and never had a problem from any merchant.

I bought mine through a 3rd party via mall24/7 and received it no problems. If I were to do it again though, I would buy all the accessories over there as well and have it all shipped out together.
You will need an SD card, I have a Sandisk 64Mb card which fits the east coast of Oz. If you get a 128Mb card you'll fit all of Oz onto it, so go for the 128Mb one.
Buy an SD card reader/writer at the same time.
Get a genuine Magellan auxilliary power/data cable and vehicle mount. I bought an aftermarket cable here and while it works well I physically have to remove it from the gps unit if I want to remove the unit from the vehicle mount. The genuine cable/mounts allow you to simply remove gps unit from mount.
I bought a small pouch from the local $2 shop which fits perfectly and hangs off my belt.
Mapsend products you'll have to get here, Truckster may be able to point you in the right direction there.
It's a great unit, I love it but it certainly has more features than I know how to use at the moment.
Also join the Yahoo Magellan Meridian site that Truckster has posted links to recently, if you have a problem then those guys/gals almost certainly know the answer.
Regards Andrew.

So what I gather from this (and other) threads is that you can order a Magellan GPS and accessories from the US, get an Australian basemap from the Meridian newsgroup and instal it, and you've saved about 50% compared to buying it locally. Does this also apply to the Sportrak Pro? What about warranty - I can't see the local distributor trying too hard to solve any warranty problems.

Stephen, I don't have any info on the Sportrak Pro only on the Meridian series. Perhaps if you performed a search you may find a similar group to Yahoo's magellan meridian group.

The following is quoted on Magellans own Australian website.

"In the event you purchased your receiver overseas (ie not within the Australia) we will honour the Magellan warranty. Original purchase receipt is still required for overseas purchases."

So, even if you purchased the gps from overseas it IS still covered under warranty.
Regards Andrew.

Stephen, I just did a search on Yahoo groups for sportrak gps units and found one with 600 plus members. You will have to apply to join, like most Yahoo groups but I'm sure they'll have all the info you'll need.
their address ishttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/sportrakgps

Thanks Andrew. I've never bought anything of this value overseas before but it now looks very attractive. It's a pity that we have to do this to get a GPS for a fair price - I'd rather support local businesses, but not if they're ripping me off.
