I have recently bought a Nissan Patrol and would like to fit a bullbar and a winch.Costs involved in this exercise are substantial and I would appreciate your thoughts regarding the available equipment. Could those with experience in this area please advise me accordingly.

The bar is up to you, what you like the look of..

ARB make good stuff but as you see you pay for it. TJM have good gear too.

Winches...
Warn, Brawn, Premier, Thomas, etc are all good...

Personal preference is Warn, been around long time, well proven..

Anotehr point is ask people with winches how often they use them... Most will say 1ce a year.. Lot of money but peace of mind to travel alone.

Truckster,

This is my line of thought exactly. I don't care if I don't use it. I like to go bush but I enjoy coming home as well!

The Nissan winch bar has the warn winch mount up in an side down orientation. This means that the breather holes in the winch motor body end up at the top to let water in but not out. So if you get the nissan bar remember to have this addressed by fitting a winch breather kit or blocking the hole and filing a new one.

I am not sure about the TJM or ARB bars but the Nissan bar is, I thinks, made by one of these.

Albert,

Bought my Patrol 3rd hand....used to be an ex cop car out Armidale way.
It came with a factory fitted Nissan bar, and Warn 8000 winch. These were fitted by Nissan while it was owned by the NSW Police.

I think these items alone are about $3000 fitted (as you say substantial). So I was lucky to get them fitted.

I've had no problems with it pulling trees off the roads, others out of sand, stumps and trees out of the ground (helping my mate with the fun part of my kind of gardening).

Thanks Paul,
Have you experienced a down side to the weight on the front end. That is, Do you need to upgrade suspension to cope with the load?
I should mention also, I have looked at a 12,000 lb Warn, but it is a mighty big (heavy) winch!

Albert,

Suspension is standard.

Everything I have had to winch so far has either been a stand to the side - handbrake on and winch. Or, sit in the car, handbrake on and foot on the brake and winch. Some of the garden stumps we were trying to pull out acutally were pulling the car forward.

We would of tied the rear of the car off but the only thing was my mates next door neighbours house.......i dont think so.

My best effort so far was out the back of the blue mountains, where I resuced my mate in his Discovery V8, he went down a slippery, dry, severly gutted out fire track, I watched him slid down and thought no way....being my first trip out with the car and waited at the top for him to turn around and get out......he couldn't get back up (regardless of how many rocks we put under the wheels to get some traction).......glad I had the winch.

Hi,

I'm in the process of ordering a new Patrol (still hagling), the best price I have received for the Nissan Steel Winch Compatible Bull Bar is $800 (ex gst, ex stamp duty). I presume the cost of this is slightly subsidised by the dealer keeping the original bumper. I called a few 4WD Shops and the cheapest winch so far was the Premier Winch (9000 pound) at $1295 and $132 fitting. ARB have the Magnum 9000 for $1350 plus fitting.

Good Luck !

At least the winch installation price looks reasonable when comparing the cost of a dual battery system !!

Phil,

I've installed the dual battery system and I'm interested in the Premier or the Magnum but I've been unable to get any feedback from current users of these winches.

Ok... Chopper made a point below about that the winch would be lucky to weigh as much as a person and to sit on the bullbar and take note of the amount of dip which he says shouldnt be much at all, but Albert doesnt have a bullbar yet because he is asking of a bar and winch combo. I agree with Chopper on the winch only theory though.
I said in my post that when i "first installed" my bar and winch it did drop a fair bit.
I should have said that after a while it dropped the front a fair bit, which it really did.
I have done suspension mods to rectify that problem as Truckster made mention.
My bar is a steel arb winch bar 1998 model and i bought a new X9 superwinch which seem to be really big in the states but having said that i noticed that they are built in Europe i think from memory.
I bought the X9 from 4wd systems at the adelaide 4x4 show last year for $1200.......
The build quality does seem less than the warns, ox, etc etc,, but it has pulled a few of my mates to the top of sand dunes without any probs..

You will want to update your suspension if you go with a steel bar and winch... specially with dual batteries and other goodies..

then you will want to do the rear as you load up the car or trailer with it...

never ending pit of $$!

Seriously, what does a winch weigh???

less than a grown person??

Sit on the bullbar and see if the truck dips at all.

I can jump on my bullbar withour much movement, hence i did not need to upgrade my suspension further when the winch went on.

Don't ignore the hydraulic winches. I did a lot of looking before i purchased (and a lot of using other people' winches) The hydraulic suits my needs down to the ground.

Only had it 2 weeks and used it twice!!

Paul suggested anchoring the rear of the 4wd to a house (or tree) whilst pulling something rather big or heavy with the winch on the front. Supposing the object does not move and you keep on pulling with 8000lbs force, what do you think is most likely to give? Did I hear someone say the chassis of the 4wd? Thats right! So unless you want a stretched fourbie secure the FRONT of the 4wd to a tree with the strap/cable/chain running from the bull bar under the 4wd through a guide at the towbar.
8000lbs is a fair pull for a chassis to resist.

Just re-read the manual and your right Ian.

Most of the stumps I was helping clear all of it moved to a point where it started to drag the car, I could of choked the wheels but we opted to dig and cut a root then try again.

you do not need a heavy steel bull bar,I have the standard alloy bar with the OX 10,000LB Hydraulic winch fitted.
all you need is the chassis mounting plate, and cut three of the vertical bars out, fitted it myself. (if you like send your email address to rmather56@dodo.com.au and I will send you some photos as it does not show up in my rig shots)

Ronnie,
I have done half of the job this afternoon. I bought a Warn XD9000, now I need to make a decision about a bar and I'm certainly not sure which way to go yet. I would'nt think that there would be much difference in the weight of a steel bar compared to alloy + steel mount
