GU series one was launched in 1997 at that stage there were no cab chassis only wagons, 4.5 petrol ST and TI, 4.2 Normally aspirated diesel DX only and 2.8 TD ST and DX.
In April 1999 the 4.2 was upgraded to 4.2 TD and ST trim, the cab chassis was released.
In 2000 the 2.8TD was dropped and the 3.0D was launched also there were some changes to the trim and grill and it was called Series 2 GU
In 2002 the series 3 was released with again some minor changes and the release of the 4.8 petrol and the fix of most computer problems in the 3.0L
In Jan 2003 the series 3 had a minor uplift and the 4.2TD was given an intercooler and electronic timing control.

I hope it helps.

Will,

"and the fix of most computer problems in the 3.0L "

Is this something I should ask Nissan about as my car is currently in being serviced by them and I have to pick it up tommorrow.

I know its had the Oil capacity problem fixed.

ThanksPaul

Paul.

lots of 3.0 GU's had power problems like the car going flat lacking power.. ECU tweak or replacement was the answer. If you have not had a problem they wont do anything. If its a manual, then worry.. 5th gears are like made of glass in some of the 3.0 GU's.

Truckster,

Yes its a manual, suppose I should say to them I want it corrected before it does fail as it is a known issue?

I suppose they will say it is not a recall item so they will not fix it unless it breaks?

Last thing I want is to strip 5th gear whilst doing 110km/h towing a van.

Truckster,

I took it in on monday (yes 4 days ago) to get a starting problem looked at........(more on that in a new thread once I get the car back)

I also mentioned when I dropped it off the gearbox was sometimes difficult to change gears and sometimes the gear changes felt very metal on metal or it felt like the synchro was not right as sometimes you could feel the meshing of the gears during the change.......

They said the oil was a little low and they adjusted the selector bush?

I've read the archives about the 5th gear problem and there is one thing that is going to make me raise this as an issue with them (Article 3437 and a comment from Rickwagupatrol)

"I mean, i for one wouldn't like for it to go when my missus is driving with all the kids in the car, up the freeway at 100kmh, then bang, there goes 5TH GEAR. she would freak out. I shudder at the consequences!!!"

.......This is the wifes car and she tranports the kids in it.

If they say no...I'll ask for it in writting.

the reason they dont want to know about it, its a PRICK of a job from what I hear, and having picked up a GQ 5 sp they are PHUQUIN HEAVY!!!

Yes get it in writing and mention the 5th gear replacement thing and heavier shaft, with different splines, and different 5th gear itself....

Paul

there have been lots of posts on 5th gear problems. It is both the 4.2 and the 3.0 that is affected up until about mid 2002 when the gearbox was upgraded. There are lots of vehicles where the box has not failed and lots that have.

Do a search and you will find more info on this topic.

The faulty 5th gear is from 2000 to 2001 series.
The gear manufacturer made a mistake with tolerances on 5th gear splines.

Series 1 99 GUs (3.0L did not exist then) and series 3 GUs are exempt from this problem.

Im 99.9% sure Nissan wouldnt tell you if there was a problem with the series 3 GU!

They denied any problems with Series 1 and 2!

There were no problems with series one, Nissan revised the gearbox when the series 2 was released (3.0L engine) and that is when the problems started.
The technical information was not given to me by Nissan but it was given by NIssan to the dealerships.
