Patrol 4.8 manuel fuel consumption

I currently own a GU 4.8 petrol/Auto and am very happy with it. Not one problem in 80,00 kms except heavy on fuel. The Patrol has done Simpson, old telegraph to Cape, Anne Beadell etc, not just local.
Has any one been using a 4.8 with manuel 5 speed gearbox and if so what fuel consumption are you getting in city and country running.
I get 3.2 km to litre crossing the Simpson French line (my worst consumption)

In the last review I saw on the 4.8 in 4wd monthly test the 4.8l returned economy of about 30l/100km of towing, sand driving and low range work. I would say that your consumption would be expected to be around this for the desert slugging so your 3.2km/l would be normal (for this vechile, that is!).

Yep sounds about right, our friends get about 24/26 per 100 out of there 4.5 patrol manual pulling the camper trailer loaded to the hilt and about 18/20 around town. I presume the 4.8 would use a tad more being a bigger donk but not always the case. Regards Steve M

Yes you should be pretty happy as has about the same life cycle costs as 4.2 without the hassles.

My 2002 manual average 16.5lt 100k over more than 100,000km carefully monitored. This includes lots of 4wding testing pulling a bike trailer etc etc , but driven conservatively mostly (100kph on trips).

Melb - Cape york - return also same. Even cross country recently up the Hay it only used 24lt/100k max.

Different engine maps and city/hwy also return much the same consumption.

Auto's while rated less at 17.2lt/100k usually use a little more due to lack of engine braking

Robin, a little off topic, but “Different engine maps” does this mean you have been able to get into your Consult OBD-II ECU and change +2Deg of ignition timing. If you have, I’d be very interested to know how.

No I have not done that - although their is a special yahoo group devoted to that process.

I have not seen it verified that it is OBD-II for sure , have you seen such a reference?

I have Unichip fitted , which I can select between standard and different advance set up with appropriate fuel map.

Also have my own design little ecu which users the "resistor" in AFM meter trick and a few oxy sensor tricks.

Only my own little mods seem capable of dropping fuel use as Unichip doesn't , but its all only a litre or 2 and not really worth the effort unless your into playing (which I am).

Thanks Robin, I was just curious. I suspect that the 4.8 Patrols in Oz could be ISO 9141 compliant because their circuit diagram utilizes pin 7 on the OBD-II diagnostic socket. Check your socket to see if you have a wire in pin 7. You should also have wires in 4, 5, and 16. Also a member of the Patrol forum from Saudi or UAE (not sure) said that he was using a Scangauge on his 4.8 patrol.
Diesel models don’t use pin 7, so are not compliant, but should be able to use Nissans Consult system and after some research, I think that their older Consult can be used on later models with OBD-II sockets, but software could be a problem and a plug adaptor would have to be made up or bought.
I’m surprised that there isn’t more talk about this subject on Nissan forums in Oz because it seems that owners of later model Nissan cars here are missing out on some valuable diagnostic technology. Maybe I should start a new thread.
I know there are some new developments in the wind, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Yes mine has pin7 used via DLC so could be. If I was sure I'd get a scanguage real fast.

Might pursue that one some more , melb 4wd shows on soon to.

For me its been a constant battle to figure out everthing even with the Euro manual which doesn't cover manual 4800 , but with some inside Nissan help I have a lot under control now , even getting diag codes was a pain , let alone the mysteries of relevant replacement brake pads etc etc , so haven't put that much effort into ECU stuff.

Along the way its been a rough ride , try cross linking the cruise control to work in 4wd and applying a pulse compression algorythm to the pulse trail to bypass speed controls and breaking out into the odd cold sweat when you light up various
warnings before breakfast.

Anyway the Nissan technical (invitation only group) plays mainly with other Nissans and the odd zd30 , breaking codes etc.

Robin, what a funny situation, I have a ScanGauge, but it doesn’t work on my 3.0Di.
I am running an In Car PC and would like to have some engine parameter details on display while driving. You know, just to keep an eye on that ZD30, particularly MAF voltages etc. I already have Boost, EGT and volt gauges, so I’m not too interested in changing any parameters, just monitor them.
It’s a shame I cant view the yahoo patrol forum, I may have to sign up.
Also I have had some interesting correspondence with PLMS on this subject and Martin from PLMS suggested that adapting a 16 pin plug to their 14 pin plug should work on a non ISO compliant Nissan Consult system.
I may have to give that a try. That link I gave you didn’t work, so try this LINK

last year my 03 Navara twin cab diesel used 95 lts crossing the Simpson to Oodnadatta.

This year I used 1000 lts towing a loaded up camper 6500 km on our trip , I am happy with that, just remember knowing your vehicles drinking habits is 1/2 the battle.

A heavy fuel useage, is the price you will sometimes pay for these adventures, after all, you must have a reliable vehicle, or it will cost you a great deal more !.

It's strange Richard, I checked Robins comments and I can't find anything about a light weight 4.8 Patrol. I can only suggestb you keep your hands on the keybord as it must be affecting your eyesight.
