The service book for my Troopy Factory Turbo Diesel 1HD-FTE says to adjust the valves at 20,000 km intervals. Do most people get them done as frequently as this. What is the usual cost. It looks like a lot of work getting to them.

How ya's goin
In the gregorys service manual(1HZ/1HD FTE) indicates 40000km inspect intervals for both engines,1HZ has shims that follow a cam where as the 1HD FTE has "tappets" which have a screw/locknut system that anyone who has ever done a valve adjustment should be able to do
they need to have 0.20 mm for intake,0.50 mm for exhaust
dunno what it will cost, but it is not that difficult of a job

We had ours done at 75000 km first time were going to get them done at 80000 km (on New Town Toyota)'s recommendation at, but we were going on a trip and did the 80 at 75.
Toyota would at 40 then 80 have the troopy overnight and listen to the engine run when cold..
It's not a cheap job as the cross over tube needs removeing and there are 24 valves and the cross over
bridge to set, replace all parts and
test
80000 km (75000 km) service $1239.90 ind GST

Richard,
You've just reminded me why I do my own servicing :-)))
But the 80k service has a lot of parts and oils:
Wheel bearing seals x4; Engine oil, Oil filter; both fuel filters, brake fluid, coolant, grease, Diff and transmission oils, air filter, so it all adds up. All that stuff costs me about $450-500 so $1239 is reasonable for a dealer.
Toyota specifically say "adjust" the valve clearances, and this is factored into the labour cost. Its only the petrol vehicles with shims where they have a listen, and only adjust if necessary.

Theres a few items in the service book that are pretty conservative.
Like Andrew, I've been told to do both valve clearance and wheel bearings at 40k instead of 20k.
I do all my own work on my 1HD-FTE. The valve clearances are about 3 hours for me to do - I take my time. I'd expect a Toyota mechanic to take 60-90minutes. Removing the pipes is easier than it looks - all the gaskets are metal, so do not need replacing. The EGR pipe needs to be undone both ends.
I follow the procedure in the workshop manual for the adjustment. But it can be difficult to "check" the clearance - its difficult to insert the feelers for the clearances because of the unusual
bridge arrangement, so I simply slacken them off and adjust the clearances to spec.
Mechanics sometimes
check the adjustment with an ear placed close to the engine. Your service book specifically states "adjust" for the 1HD-FTE. Only on the petrol models do they state "inspect". So make sure that they actually remove the tappet cover and "adjust" because thats what they'll charge you for.
Cheers
Phil
