G.T.
I purchased a fry pan -- aluminimun- very heavy base from an op-
shop recently. The exterior of the pan is unmarked -ie new condition, but the teflon coating has shallow scratch marks. My guess is that the previous owner used metal cooking implements , not plastic ones. Paid the exorbitant sum of $1.00 for it.
I am aware of the cancer implications of cooking on a teflon surface, when the coating is burning onto the food or flaking off. This is not happening, but I thought that if could get it re - coated just to be safe.
So the bottom line of this post is can anyone tell me who can re - coat a fry pan preferably on the
Gold Coast or alternatively in S.E. Queensland? I have looked in the yellow pages and in the archives with no success. Thanks in advance, Regards G.T.

I thought you would get cancer from teflon only if living in California :-)
I would be very surprised if a) you find a recoater (in SEQ) and b) it is really worth it. Hence the price :-)

I wouldn't bloody worry about it - you can get cancer from almost anything these days. If you read all the health warnings the human race as we know it is doomed. ;-)

We use one of those heavy cast iron fry pans puchased in an Aussie Disp store. The one with the wooden handle. $12 bargain. I suspect you can get them in all
camping stores. Best thing I ever got - better than any expensive pans, blackened up a dream, easy to clean, maintains heat evenly. Just wonderful. Does a mean steak or bacon and eggs.

Cleaning is a breeze - simple, do not use detergent. Get it super hot after you have finished cooking (so it's just about smoking) and pour
water on it. I think the chefs call it deglazing or something. I do this once or twice then coat it with oil. If there's any stuck bits then a quick metal scour get's that off. If you use detergent then food starts to stick again. It gets hot enough this way that any germs are
well and truly gone.

Reminds me of a story. Son returns to the family farm on holidays from uni, Dad says, hows the uni studies going son? Good, we are making a universal solvent. What's that? says Dad. It's a solvent that will dissolve anything. That's good son, what do you store it in?
So how do you make a non stick surface stick to the pan?

Buy a new one for less than $10 G.T. Better still go stainless steel if health risks are an issue. Cheers
