Hi all, can anyone advise on a DVD player which runs on 12v dc? I am NOT looking for a portable unit with its own screen, but an ordinary household player which feeds into a TV etc via cable, but can plug into mains and reduces voltage thru an adaptor.
The reason being, it would eliminate using the invertor and its intrusive fan.
Appreciate suggestions of brand

Never seen a 'household' one like that. Maybe try to source one of the portable units that have the seperate screens that you hang on the car headrests (we have one of these) via the world of eBay. We plan to use it in the van with normal LCD TV and in the car with it's little screens.

Here's a go.
Tricky's have a 7" portable DVD player for $128. I know you said you didn't need a screen but this little gizmo has cables to run off 12V and cables to plug it into your TV. That is, it doubles as a 12V DVD player.
It's the complete package for what you want and has the added benefit of being a travelling DVD with screen.
Rechargable battery as
well.

You are truly inspired! - we were looking on the Internet yesterday for one. The only brand we found was Lennoxx - do a search. It is available as a buy now on eBay but that wasn't the cheapest price. Quite a few Internet sites listed it. I have raised a question on the caravaners
forum to see if anyone has them to find out if they are any good or not before we decide to purchase. We can use the laptop, but the old rooster wants to be able to play DVDs through the telly as he thinks I'll be playing on the computer too much.
I only play on the computer on days that start with M (or end with Y)

Thanks everyone...very helpful. The reason I wanted a player only is because the 240v versions are very very cheap, down to about $30....while the car/indash/portable units are 5 to 10 times that much.
I'll look into the Lenoxx and Supercheap situation.
Thanks again

We will try the Lennoxx 12v and purchase on line. Our daughters advise us that you get what you pay and the el cheapos often don't last long. True with so many things, but not always.

I bought the Supercheap "Superworks" DVD. It has a 12-volt input and comes with a 240 AC adapter -- but no 12v cigarette ligher lead. I'll have to make one up.
The unit is very small, about half the width of a regular slimline household DVD player. It's a top-loader, remote control, RCA video/left-right audio out lead.
Although it's stated consuption is 1.2 amps, it's actually less than half, 550 milliamps as measured by my DMM.
So the advantages are it uses very little power, take svery little space, and is relatively supercheap.
