G'day People ,
How do you keep your camper trailer rear swing tailgate open ??
Is there a simple device than can be purchased 'off the shelf' ??
Photos would be appreciated if you have previously solved this problem .
Cheer's .

I have seen a few but do not have one as I don't have a rear swing door.

I have seen a bracket (like a U channel) slipped over the pivot point or hinge. This locks it in. Also seen a small bolt fitted into a hole on the pivot point. Hard to describe but it is like a top and bottom plate welded onto the camper and same on the rear tailgate. A heavy duty bolt is then used to attached the 2 to allow to pivot. If the plates are big enough then you can drill a small hole when in the open position and fit a pin or bol to lock.

Also seen a couple of small brackets attached to the camper and rear door and then a bar inserted (like the old medieval castle doors).

Sorry no photos and description is a bit vague but hope you get the gist.

Do you have a photo? This will help to get the creative juices flowing from the inventive lurkers on this forum.

Regards
David

TF,

Maybe you could adapt a gas strut?

G'day Mike,
I thought about a gas strut - - but this scenerio on the rear swing out tailgate needs a 'two way' holding application .
And we need to hold the swing out taligate in position in bad weather situations .
I think that a gas strut will only hold it open - without any adjustment to the actual position of the tailgate at different angles .
I maybe wrong -
That's why I am asking for advice .
Thank's ,
TF .

Mine uses a swing out bracket that is permanently attached under the kitchen box. This attaches to the trailer body via a threaded "hole" and a tent pole "bit". (pardon the technical terms!). !MPG:3!!MPG:4!

Thank's Dave for the Pics .
Your system is easy because you already have your camp kitchen attached to your tailgate .
My Tailgate needs securing in it's own right .( IE - it is a seperate item to the kitchen / cooker )
Thanks .

Our camper trailer has 2 metal "tabs" with a hole in each, one fixed to the tailgate and one permanently fixed to the trailer and when tailgate is opened the "tabs" overlap each other and a simple bolt is slipped through the hole to keep it open. I'll take a photo tomorrow and post it (if I can work out how to post a photo!!)

Cheers

If you don't want to modify the trailer there's an easy solution.

Get a piece of C section that fits over the top of the tailgate about 150mm long. Weld a piece of flat across the end to make a "T".

Sit it on the tailgate when open and the T holds it in both directions. You may need a small stop block on the inside to stop it sliding up if theres a big gap between the end of the tailgate and the back of the trailer.

The second option is like the kitchen shown above but instead of bracing to the kitchen just go back up the tailgate about 200mm and come across to the trailer on a 45° angle to a drop in pin.

Quick & simple.

Try fitting one of those "spring loaded tailgate pins" onto the tailgate itself. You will have to fit a piece of flat for the pin to drop into.

Have a look here Site Link

Works a treat on the Southern Cross Campers. Weld next to the hinge area
