Howdy all,
I have an old fischer & paykel motor/pump unit & i've heard you can make a power generator out of them.
does anyone know if this is correct & if so where would i get the info.
any thoughts & info would be appreciated.

Cheers with beers

DC generators and DC motors are, essentially, the same machine and by externally turning a DC motor it will produce power. AC motors don't work in the same way and won't, generally, do this. (It's years since I did motor theory so I'll welcome corrections?).

Even if you had an external drive force you would have to regulate it's speed, probably in some sort of load sensing feedback loop, to ensure the voltage from the motor remained constant. So the answer is yes, it can be done but it would not be worth the considerable hassle and additional design/engineering required to obtain a workable system. Far easier to buy a 550W GMC 2 stoke generator for $98.

Fisher and Paykel Smartdrive units use a permanent magnet ac motor which are easily converted to DC generators up to 800W. Company called Ecoinnovation makes and sells them in NZ.
