hi all hope you all had a great chrissy and new year and enjoyed a holiday if you had one. Now the question i have after packing the tent up in the pi##$ing rain is this?, have any of you come up with a good design on a thing to pull out those tent pegs that you just can't get out ,and i have tried using the other end of a peg but with the mud and the rain mixed together it is just to damn slippery

Big Fella,
I have seen somewhere but I cant remember where a tent peg pulling device that has a handle on one end and a hook on the other, similar to a fish hook remover.
Maybe someone else will be able to tell you where to get one from

I was gonna mention that archimedes developed a good system that can be easily replicated with stuff around a campsite but that device pretty much does it all in one and applying his useful technique of leverage.

I always have trouble fitting in the neccessities. Whilst I have no doubt it would work, I just don't have room for everything like that. I guess I will just struggle for a few minutes getting the odd tent peg out that resists.LOL!

C Dog,
You wouldn't believe it. We're among those few dinosaurs still on dial up. Checked the Hillbilly site. Cut the lawn (grass),enjoyed a beer, took a shower, and arrived back to see the last picture of a wok loading.
Yes! I thought, 3 to go .(Hi ten pegs, then the puller.Yes, almost there.)

To quote a recent British comedy "Computer says No."
(As in no flamin images of the puller.)

Anyway, we use 10mm ss rod with chain link welded near top. Works for us, beats standard design hands down, and may the bloke who puts 'em on the market drink to our health.
(I now sit back in anticipation of the flood of design errors that we've overlooked)

I made my own, Use a piece of 5 or 6mm rod, 60 to 80cm long. Bend one end like a tent peg and from the other end come down 30cm and weld a nut on the rod, now slide a piece of tube 15cm long and 1mm larger than inside dia than the rod used down to the nut and weld another nut on the top. To use put hook end under the peg to be removed and slide tube upwards, works a treat, maximum space taken up is length plus about 15mm dia for tube.

Yes - it is called a Wakjac I think. BCF have them at the moment for about $40. They are bright yellow so it would be hard to loose. I am going to get one shortly.

If you own a Landcruiser, just use the jack handle.

Greatest multi use piece of 4wd'ing equipment ever made the Landcruiser jack handle. It pulls tent pegs, puts billy's in the coals and retrieves them. Also works for camp ovens and their lids!

I've even been known to use it on the jack in the rare event of a flat tyre!

big fella...

I use a pair of fencing pliers, they have a recess in the front of the jaw for the peg and tail of sorts for levering stiff ones out of hard ground...

Good idea Blue ............
Similarly, I have been using cheap multi-grips for years, they live in the tentpeg bag with the hammer, some cane toads and about seven varieties of ants, spiders, lizards etc ..........a bonk with the multi-grips tends to pacify them, though .

Multigrips are also really useful at the campfire for FIRMLY lifting hot thingies off and on the fire .................. cheapies cost about $5 and well worth it !!

Hi to Crazy Dog in CNS ...........
Great link, that HillBilly site .................. excellent products and some great ideas, ay!!!
Many of them are incorporated in the famous Pedro's Pole BBQ, which is available for community viewing on my Members Profile !!
If you'll pardon a little boasting .... and total cost was about one and fourpence ha'penny, if my memory serves me correctly ??????????

There is such a thing: Site Link I have one; simple but very effective. In hard soil (where you've had to use a metal mallet to hammer the pegs in in the first place) you must twist and pull at the same time. No need to touch the pegs to get them out of the ground and into the bag. Casper

I use this one myself and would recommend it to anyone.
It greatly reduces the pressure required to remove the peg from hard or soft ground.

I got one of my heavy duty tent pegs, a piece of round bar about 70-80 mm long, drilled a hole the same diameter as the peg in one side of the pipe, inserted peg, welded and a coat of cheap paint (preferably bright colour) Works a treat. If you need to use it as a lever, use your hammer as a fulcrum...

Whoa there mike ol mate; the claret is still clouding the corneas, courtesy of Chrissy.
My image is that you have a length of pipe with a stub of 1/2 " rod into the pipe, welded, 'n then I lose it.
Any more clues ?

Pretty much, however I used a tent peg as it already has the hook in it, and instead of bar it should have read 'pipe'.

Hope the sun is out and cleared the cloud from in front of your eyes ;)

The best tent peg puller I have ever used is a " claw hammer ",, and I only use those big heavy duty pegs.

Problem is that I see a lot of people trying to yank the pegs out ,,,, WRONG !
Simplist way is to not hit them all the way in, then use the claw of the hammer and twist them in their own hole first ( rotate the hammer ) the pegs virtually fall out

Never had to struggle yet !
Cheers Mate

Wish I could take credit for it....but I can't. I actually came across this hammer/peg puller in a camping store some years back. I think it cost about $5. Wouldn't be hard to make, it is just as you suggest big fella, a piece of pipe welded to a a steel hook and a solid cylindrical piece of steel for the hammers head.

It has been extremely useful.

I saw one of these in Freedom Camping & I was very impressed with it. The week before I had made my own by getting a claw hammer & cutting off one claw & cutting again to make a point .. very effective & you need the hammer anyway for getting the pegs in!

We just use a cheap claw hammer with the claws ground down with an angle grinder. Dual use - we use it to belt them in when we arrive and use it again to get them out.

It gets most out easily and for the real tough ones we use the claws to grab the top and rotate them before pulling.

Cheers
