Hey everyone, I have noticed the manual gearbox in my cruiser has a rattle when idling in neutral. I had just done a 50Klm trip then pulled up at
home to let the car cool down before shutting off, when I put the clutch in the noise goes away!
Is this the thrust washer/bearing etc?
Im sure my old 80 had the same noise but that had nearly 300k on the clock.
Can anyone else confirm?
Regards Jason

Jason,
I assume your vehicle is a HDJ100 (factory TD), and not an aftermarket turboed HZJ105 Cruiser. I have the same H150F gearbox as you, and
mine is quiet, having done 100,000k.
Check the obvious things - that the oil level is OK, and that the oil is the correct 75/90 gear oil. Sometimes thinner oils are slipped into these boxes to improve cold shifting.
But these noises has been common in Toyotas for as long as they've been around.
Two possibilties that I know of:
#1 If the noise is high pitched and goes away when you very lightly touch the clutch, it will probably be the clutch release bearing touching a groove thats wearing into the diaphragm spring forks - its just a nuisance.
#2 If the noise is a lower pitched rumble and present until the clutch is fully depressed, it will most likely be coming from the input shaft or idler gears which are all turning unless the clutch is depressed. Usually just some play or a bit of roughness developing. Most people do nothing about this, as the gearbox works fine. It would be unusual to have a serious problem in the heavier H150F box.
Cheers
phil

Hello Phil, yeah it seems to be a lower pitched rumble. Yes it is a factory turbo diesel. The vehicle had been serviced before I bought it, so it is possible the wrong oil type is in it. Done by non toyota dealer...
Yeah I had the same noise in my 80 series box and that gave me no issues.
Thanks for you help mate.
