For years i have driven manual 4x4's and it was just a simple foot on the clutch and then slide your transfer box gearstick into the right areas....
Seems a little more of a fight with the gearstick in the auto... Is there a trick??.,...
does it have to be in nuetral or park??
Nissan Patrol i refer to>...

I am struggling to go from 4low back up to 2high.... Seems to get caught in 4low....Then when it finally goes to the PTO area a message on the dash comes on which says (ATP) then it is hard to get out of that also....
Looked in the book and it makes some sort of statement about auto's maybe getting stuck between these gears and if it does,, just turn the engine off,,, free it and restart.... just wondering if i am the only one having difficulties there or not...???
Not that i am complaining yet???

Some vehicles you need to be in park as there is a residual torque applied to the output shaft by the auto in neutral, not enough to move the vehicle, but enough to spin up the tcase input shaft when going hi-lo through the transfer case neutral.

Truckster, nothing to do with this thread, but about your i/c. If you want to save frieght costs while andrew mods your existing i/c, you could convert it to non i/c? I have all the standard crossover bits required. Give me a ring 59955982 if you want them. Hope this makes sense?

Voxson, if your hubs aren't locked it should be in either park or neutral for either 4 high or 4 low. Once you are in 4x4 high you can then shift while on the move in and out of 4x4 high and 2wd high. (NOTE: not on a hard surface for 4x4 unless you want transmission windup)
For 4x4 low the vehicle must be stopped and in either neutral or park and don't pussyfoot around getting it from 4x4 high to 4x4 low it should be a firm shift between the 2 gates pushing down on the lever at the same time. If you don't get a smooth shift and get stuck between high and low it makes an awful noise of grinding gears until you shift it back to high and try again.
Regards Andrew.

I slide the vehicle into neutral as it rolls to a stop with the wheels pointing forward, then try to shift out.
If there's reisistance, slip it into drive and move off slowly and repeat the process, but apply pressure to the 4wd lever as the vehicle's about to stop.
If still no joy, I make sure I'm on a soft surface (ie not bitumen) and go for a drive making sure I turn a couple of times to left & right then coast in a straight line and have another go.
After all that I generally get there.

Hi Voxon, I have to put the stick into Neutral, but i also put a little pressure on the trasfer stick when I want to change (when the truck is still rolling a little) and then it usually drops into gear - low to high & visa-versa... Although I don't really have any problems so it could be something more serious - worth more investigation and trials. Cheers, Andrew.
