Hi all
Doing a bit of research for a friend, Who has
1993 Hilux 2.8 Turbo DTS system 120,000 kms
It has the standard Radiator fitted Which was removed and sent off to be cleaned,
Motor flushed
Is this common for a turbo Hilux ?
Is the standard radiator a bit small ?
Could the viscous fan need looking at ?
Thanks
Luke

Luke, You have to find out when its overheating.
Is it overheating during free way conditions? If so it is a water flow problem.
Is it overheating during traffic conditions? If so its an air flow problem.
If the fuel pump is overfueling, this could cause over heating as
well as your EGT's will be too high.
Hope this helps

It overheats towing in warm weather 28 to 34 deg c
And it will overheat without towing long hills ect
The turbo was fitted by MTQ about 5yrs ago i would assume it had been properly dynoed and EGT checked

Hi there Luke, I have a 2.8 non turbo hilux, first thing I would be checking is the thermostat, Pull out throw a genuine one back in it $20, next would be the viscous coupling, this should be quit loud at first start in the morning then with bonnet up so you can hear it it should fade out after about 20 seconds, also when up to operating temp and sitting in traffic for a while put in neutral and give rev around the 2g mark should hear fan roaring once again will probably need the bonnet up so you can hear it over the rattle of the 2.8D. Has he only just purchased the vehicle or has he had it a while and has become an issue. If he has just bought it, it could also be an issue that the previous owner has tweaked the fuel pump a bit to get some more power but has caused it to overfuel and run hot. If all other basis are covered i would be booking it into a diesel injection place and getting the pump timing checked and fuel pump and also the turbo to make sure they havnt wound the boost up as
well trying to get some more power. This is one of the reasons I never had myn done as some blokes on here who have been there done that have said overheating was an issue but in saying that every turbo mob I rang said overheating would not be an issue even with standard radiator.BUT I take the advice from people who have either had or have the same vehicle with these issues and listened to them not some one who is about to take 3 and 1/2 k from me. Hope this helps in some way, maybe other people on here will also have some more helpful hints which I'm sure they will. Regards Steve M

It was also mentioned on here a while ago that the clutch fan doesnt lock up whilst travelling at freeway speeds this is crap, if the radiator water temp is rising then the clutch fan will cut in to pull the air through, I was out an about on sunday 41.6c here in penrith and had to go to 7hills and back
home on with air on and I could even over the rattle of the 2.8 hear my clutch fan roaring its nut off sucking air and my temp doesnt and never has moved from about 2mil under half. I put new clutch coupling in myn a few months ago as
mine was locked on and was roaring its nut off all the time. Cost me more from toyota than non genuine but was advised against a non genuine as they make one to fit about 3 different vehicles but when I rang toyota they had 3 different part numbers for the 3 vehicles listed for the non genuine part that was enough to convince me. Hope all this helps. Regards Steve M

Steve,
He has had the Hilux for about 5 or 6 Yrs 80,000kms when he got it
Had the turbo fitted Just after he brought it Fitted by MTQ(i would think it has been dynoed and EGT checked),
first time the overheatin began he replaced the thermostat with a genuine one,
then the radiator was removed and sent off to be cleaned

I presume by the way your talking he has put the radiator back in since and still has the same issue ??? If so I would say the viscous coupling on the fan is stuffed if he has no major issues in the last 5 years, or has this been an on going issue since the turbo was fitted ??? I even went to the extreme of ringing people who were selling turbo 2.8's in the papers with turbo on them and told them I was not intending to buy but wanted to know if they any heating issues and all bar1 said yes if towing and really steep long hills so with that and what I was told on here was enough for me. I know this doesnt solve your current problem but if this has been an on going issue then I would say you wont get rid of the problem in the conditions you have described eg towing, hot weather. If you go back through the forun (do a search) you will find people have fitted oil coolers, bigger radiators, electric fans etc and never got rid of the over heating issues. Do a search and have a read see what you think. Regards Steve M

Yes Radiator was done about 6 months ago,
The Turbo was fitted just after he brought it, he brought it at the start of winter so doesn't know of any problems before that
The only other thing left to try is the fan.
He has just fitted a water temp gauge after market to monitor not sure of the figures yet

You say he bought it with 80k on it but is now up to 120k has he had the timing belt done, if so who did it and did they line all the timing marks up properly eg fuel pump, if not timing could be out with the pump possibly causing it to over fuel if he hasnt had it done then I wold advise him to get it done asap by some one qualified cause if he doesnt know what he's doing will/possibly stuff the motor eg pistons coming up valves coming down cruch stuff the head or punch a piston out the side of
the block big $$$$ and also if that belt snaps or jumps a tooth. I worked for toyota for 5 years. Regards Steve M

I had the 2.8 with the DTS turbo and I put 3 x 30ml vials of fluid in the fan viscous hub after dimantling and cleaning replaced the radiator with an aussie desert cooler triple bypass and the sucker never moved even on the hottest of days. With the extra cylinder pressure
check and retension the head in case the cooling system is pressurising and pumping water out into the overflow as if this is the case it wont get sucked back in and this can occur without showing any signs of any other leakage such as water to oil. if got early enough it will seal and does not necessarily requir gasket replacement.
These are just other possibilities as I am sure there are plenty of others. One opinion only for what its worth.

Luke,
Has he by any chance just fitted a large set of spotties on the front limiting air flow.
Someone I know did this on his Nissan and now it heats up all the time
Regards
