80 series didnt handle the heat perfectly

Had a couple of warm days in Perth. I went to Kalgoorlie for the Long weekend. Driving out of Perth the temp gauge started heading North on the hills between Perth and Northam. Nothing excessive maybe 2/3 and dropped rapidly back to Normal going downhill or on the flats. Investigation of the clutch showed it made a couple of turns after turning the motor off so it might be time to regell it (last done 2 years ago)
Also the aircon struggled a bit. It worked fine (too cold) until the heat really cut in then it blew cool air but not up to its usual standard (I know the aircon cuts out if the temp gauge rises but this wasnt it). I also noticed the Air con drain had little/no water coming from it where as usually it drops quite a bit.
Could the 2 things be related or does my aircon just need a regas... Or was it just to darn hot?
BTW the radiator is 2 years old and was flushed and cleaned of debris less than 12 months ago

Debris and baked mud between the AC heat exchanger and radiator. After 12 months it would be the first place I'd be looking if I regularly drove around up north.

Remove radiator, blow out BOTH units throughly with a powerful air compressor at exactly 90 degrees to the fins, pull out remaing seeds with tweezers and then wash with water to get the fine dust that accumulates and turns to rock hard baked terracotta when it get a few spatters of rain. GSWA Landcruisers have the AC removed for this reason.

To roughly test condition of radiator, take off both hoses, fill with water while covering the lower outlet with your hand and then quickly take it away. If the wtaer gushes out in one fast moving stream and then stops it should be OK. If it slowy flows out and seems to just taper off it will be blocked. I very much doubt the radiator would be blocked if the correct coolant was used.

I'd then get the AC gas level checked and dye tested if low.

I am very confident of the condition of the rad. It was a bit blocked with Debris from cruising goldfields tracks (It isnt based up North) but I had it all cleaned out and it has had an easy time since (I dont do mud) and the most extreme off roading it has done recently is the Roe Highway to Midland

Hi Davoe,

It was 41.7° max in Northam on Saturday.

Maybe it was just a bit too hot and the hills made the difference.

Had your aircond iced up, hence the limited water flowing out of the drain?
I've a similar problem with my HJ61 and figure it's time for a system recheck when I can afford it. Mine ran really cold, then seemed to stop working on the hottest days. Last time it was checked the guy topped it up with new R134a gas on top of the R12 or whatever it is, which might make a difference.

yea I left Kal on Sunday and had to keep turning the AC off as it was too cold. By Merriden is was still blowing cool air but I know it used to work better. I was fine but if SWMBO had been with me their might have been somr raised eyebrows
Prob does just need a regas. Would a 94 take the new gas?

Im with Tim as above, I would bet its iced up. I had a GQ Patrol when living in Kalgoorlie and on trips to Perth in summer on humid days it would ice up regularly. If you turn the aircon off for a bit with the fan still running you will find the ice will melt and it will be OK again.... Nav.

sounds to me like the evaporator is blocked externally maybe go see you're air-con specialist

is it something I can check? I did notice the drain had no water coming from it at one stage but was blowing air

Not realy but you should have noticed reduced air flow from the vents when it stopped dripping is it getting good airflow through the vents now though?

The sahara came std with an extra electric fan up front....a friend was in thesame position, but chose to fit an old fan from a commodore v6 up front to prove or disprove the clutchfan. It proved it, but i couldnt get the fan back off him because the air cond blew 5 degrees colder with it on...and the motor loved it too.
Another option to consider....

was wondering if a slightly innefficient fan clutch would effect aircon. It is a fairly easy job to add gel so that may be the quickest and easiest first port of call. I did check it and when I turned the motor off it spunforabout second. When I first got it before I regelled it the fan would just free spin and it overheated easily

Its normal for the fan to run on as you r seeing...the question is, when the temp goes up, does it cut back in?? (it will sound like it does whem first started ion the mornings)
You can check this with a cardboard carton put across the front of the rad, and the motor left at fast idle, it should kick in at about half gauge
