I have just returned from a couple of days in Kakadu & would just like to relate what a fantastic place we have in this part of the world. Sure it is steamy but I have been here in the dry before & can't describe what a transformation takes place. I was not camping or 4wheel driveing this time, instead we hob-nobed it in hotels ect. I also recommend a flight in a chopper over the park especialy to see the falls AWESOME. I now will go home and work my but off for the rest of the year to pay for our trip. But it's worth it
Mike.

Was there in the 80's in a tent (but hob nobbing in the bar:). We loved it, our kids loved it.
But that was before they wanted to charge you to get in.

Didn't charge us anything to get into the park but SURE made up for it with accomadation & food expenses.
Ps fuel was around $.1.50/l also

Hey Burnsy

Try Litchfied next trip - Kakadont aint nuffink in comparison except the mossies in Kakadont are bigger and thirstier.

Live in NT and check with locals for where and when next time you come up.

Its good to hear a welcome report from Kakadu. It is a fantastic place if you take the time to explore all the nooks and crannies throughout the park.

So many people(like the post above) extoll a negative comment on Kakadu and cannot see beyond the confines of their own inhibitions.

I lived in that part of the world before Kakadu became an entity and have been to many places in the escarpment country. Its definitely has a magic feel, and especially in the Wet season. A flight, as you have done, over the thundering waterfalls, is a sight to behold.

Cheers

Yeh - spot on Willem - having been to both - Kakadu would have to be my favourite - Litchfield seemed to be TOO accessible mostly - great place - but just not as wild as Kakadu - I get really annoyed with people who call it Kakadont - I feel that sometimes it is that people aren't willing to get in their vehicle and drive several hours to a place - this is a big, wide country, and it can take a long time to get between places - but to my mind half the enjoyment is in the getting there - my husband and I agree that some of our best times on a trip are spent in the car just getting there.
Kakadu is that sort of place - you do have to take the time to get between places - you can't zoom around in a day - you just miss too mu ch - we all need to take the time to enjoy what is around us - we've been known to take three days to travel 100k - because we saw a sign on the road and decided to investigate what was there - spent some time and then got back on the road - love it!!
(And I don't mind paying to get into some places - after all facilities have to be managed, cleaned and cared for - i.e. picking up rubbish left by careless people)

Mike I lived in Darwin for many years and the flight over kakadu and into Jim Jim falls is the only way too see it. I always felt the place was too big, too hot, too dusty and too many flies. But that flight you took is a once in a lifetime thing.
Mind you one out of 20 people think that kakadu is the best place in the world - yep each to their own. I would rather go to Ayers rock actually.
