To Gell or not to Gell

Was working today at idle and low revs with the a/c on and the old girl warmed up a bit, couldnt hear the fan roaring, been suspicious for a while, so its time to re-gell the viscous hub.
Now i have done 98% of my own mechanical work for 30 odd years but have never had the need to re-gell a fan hub, so instead of the trial and error method I thought I might ask the EO experts for the pitfalls in doing this job.
So I get what gell from where and how much do i use?
Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers Pesty

Hi Pesty, I have not 'refilled' a viscous hub but did pull one to bits after putting in a new one (from the wreckers). Two things that I noticed;

(a) The large 'O' ring had become elongated and needed to be replaced or cut and glued.

(b) A VERY small graphite (or similar) wiper came out of it's VERY small slot and got lost very easily ! Beware, when you open the halves keep an eye out for this tiny item and secure it before you accidently lose it when wipeing or cleaning the insides. Also note which around it fits into it's slot as it is shaped to rub against a rotaing surface so it's leading edge is chamferd.

Otherwise it looks rather simple.

hi pesty,

easy job to do once coupling off.

First mark where the fan goes so you mastch it up to the same position.
Next mark the two housings so you put them back in the same place.
Just check to make sure there is no plug ( some early ones had a screw(plug) where you could top them up.

If not use the correct size srew driver and just slightly take the tension off each screw using the opposite method ie 12 oclock, 6, 3,9 etc
Take care with splitting to make sure you don't damage the oring.
Add two bottles of the silicone fluid that you get from your toyota dealer. If you can't get it easily up there I will arrange and post it to you.
Don't have to clean the old stuff out just add the new and then put back together the same way making sure the oring seats properly.

Pesty, when you mentioned that you were idling along at low revs (with A/C! May your god bless you!), and felt that the Old Girl was warming up, I felt pretty comfortable (and a tad envious) of your situation.
Then you chucked in '30 years - and a need for gel' and I thought - so ?

Sorry. So sorry; wrong forum.
Apparently OT.
Davey.

WHAT???

So instead of a few dollars for some top up gell after 630 odd thousand,

I could pay megga bucks for a new nissan, thousands for new radiators, and associated garbage, that didnt work.
Thousands on new turbo's cos it might be overheating it, that didnt work.
Hacked a hole in the bonnet to cool it down, that didnt work.
Not to mention thousands of ks travelled in the heat without the A/C on cos its to hot, and it still overheats 6 years later???
Even you had to trade up to a decent engine to fix your problem, so your part way there.

The old reliable 60 got only warmer after many hrs idling, and a short trip down the road it was back to normal, and you think I should trade down to a nissan?
Not likely matey.

Spose your back in the old furnace this week too, now that PB .5 has gone for major rebuild already!

Hey Pesty if Roachies {aytol was so damn good then why would you spend $100000000000000 of dollars taken off all the Nissan bits and then decideing if you can't fix it just buy another bucket but this time try one with and engine that will hardly tick over so hopefully won't get hot.

No wonder interests rates go up its everyone raising their prices to cash in on Roachies insatiable appetite for spending on Pootrols and also I have a theory that the price of diesel is way up there cos they know they will make a packet out of Roachies 6. whatever litre donk. That is until he finds a bigger motor.

Ah the fat cats won't get rich off you and me Pesty well not at least from having to keep our 4wds rolling.

Hi Pesty

I see you have a 60 so it will probably have a plug, still easy to do just takes longer.
Undo the plug and let it drain out ( let stand overnight ).
Next you have to fill it and get no bubbles into it, some use a bit of wire and let the oil run down into, slow but it works.

Have fun
