I have a 8/84 HJ47 trayback in almost mint condition with 2H diesel in it. I am interested to know if anyone has done the above conversion. As a deisel mechanic I have a fair idea of the requirement but are just curious if there is anyone out there that has actually done it or knows a bit about it. Also interested if anyone has put a 5speed out of a BJ40/42 into a HJ47, I'm pretty sure they were a lighter transmission designed for the short wheelbase. I'm not interested in Bigger tyres, 60series transmission or overdrives, may well leave 4 speed in it, other projects I'm doing is fitting power steering ( I've got all the bits ready to go). Fitting PTO Thomas winch, fitting new sub tank out of HZJ79 to my 47. Love the 40 series cruisers, any info appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

From memory back when I had several 40 series troopies the gearbox and transfer in the shorties was the same apart from the extra gear, the 5 speed was never available in a 45 or 47 here in Oz.
The 5 speed in the later BJ's was the same as a 60 series.
They also had a slightly heavier transfer case with a bigger idler shaft etc. There were quite a few transfer case changes across the range as the trucks got heavier and the engines (12HT) were more powerful.
I had one of the last of the 47's (best Toyota we ever had) and wanted power steer and a 5 speed, spent lots of time looking into fitting both but in the end traded on a 75.
The power steer pump will not fit in the standard position on a 2H or 12ht when fitted to a 40 series chassis as it fouls the chassis and RHS engine mount. The exhaust may also have to be modded to clear the power steering box (memory fuzzy)
You would be best to fit a 60 series transmisson and transfer along with the rear diff (so you have a handbrake) or swap the rear housing on the transfer (the old one might not fir later transfer cases.
Have fun!!

Have done most of the above to my old HJ47, 5 speed (out of a 60), power steering, used a FJ 45 box, 60 series pump and the longer shaft from toyo spares, as well as bottom pully and made up the spacer for the fan. Had the bottom outlet on the radiator angled to the drivers side.

The 12ht will go in no problems for someone who knows his way around the pitfalls, which are a few but carn,t remember them.
