G'day to you All.
I just had an acquaintance ask me if he could take a Mercedes Sprinter
or a Toyota Coaster from Tibooburra to Innamincka and on to Birdsville.
He's thinking about going that way during the winter months.

It's been a few years since I went that way and don't know what the tracks are like now.
Can any of you knowledgeable people give me your thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike.

If its wet, no chance. Other wise Merty Merty may be difficult due to the dunes.
The dunes were very soft Jul 06.
The rest would just need to be slow and steady.

Thanks Wim.
I had told him about Merty Merty and suggested that going in the other direction maybe a little easier.
Do you think that maybe the case?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike.

Bore track is still dune country. Ground clearance and departure angle may also be issues. Some of the wash outs can be a bit steep.

If he does decide to do this, it may be good value to have recovery points on his bus.

G'Day Wim and others,

We did Merty Merty to Cameron corner in May '06 and I could have driven the Falcon over it without any trouble.

Even had 5 vehicles towing on-road vans heading in the other direction

Just goes to show how quickly things can change

Regards

Rolande

Two wheel drive vehicles with urban clearance levels hav just about been everywhere in Australia - often though, its done as a bit of a stunt - in ideal circumstances. Following grading, the trip you mention would be quite straight forward - the only thing you would need IMO is a second spare (some 'good' sections can still be very stony), plus the usual safety aspects (comms gear, extra tucker and water - just in case).
The best course of action IMO is to make a few chosen calls about a month before you want to go - ring the roadhouse people that live up there - many of them travel regularly between centres for supplies etc. The likes of John Hammond at Mungerannie and Adam Plate at Oodnadatta are only too happy to put you in the picture for their own areas - Innamincka, Camerons corner and BV folks are most likle going to be happy to do the same. Then all you need to consider is rain in between your calls and the trip ! Have a good 'un.

Mike we have a o2 Transit & we travelled from Bris to Winton to Boulia,Bedourie,Birdsville ,Innaminka,Brisbane.June last year.
Birdsville to Innaminka took us a day & half that was pretty slow & it had to be as the corrogations were Ruddy bad, 15ks phr was for magority of the time & gibber stone(rocks in places)& all this after the grader had been not too long before us.Not to long to the country folk probably 12 months or more but i do not hold it against them.Just have to adjust your driving to the conditions.
