GU clutch adjustment

Hi

Just wondering if there is any sort of clutch adjustment on a 4.2l gu patrol

The only adjustment is the pedal free play.

No freeplay can cause clutch to slip as you are not releasing all hydraulic pressure.

Hi Simon

Near firewall below pedal is shaft with knurled section closest to firewall and with locknut above it (closer to driver). Bit hard to get to.

Mine with 130k was getting a little close to floor so wound shaft so as to lengthen it.
As per other posts , its for free play mostly but does lift pedal operation up off floor. Can't go to far though and must ensure there is still little free play though.

Hi Robin,
Might give it a try myself.
My clutch in my GU-I 4.2TDT sometimes drags, making selecting first difficult - either not enough travel, or the spigot bearing is dragging. Took this up with Nissan under warranty, but their response was to say the clutch was worn out, and not covered under warranty. When the gearbox was out on the bench getting 5th gear fixed, got the mech to look at the clutch and he said it was perfect, with very little wear. When reassembled, the clutch gave no probs for a fair while, but then when it was out of warranty, the problem came back, so was never able to keep Nissan honest on this one.
What sort of free play are we looking at for safe adjustment?

Nissan measures it up from floor but I thought this a little rough as carpet and rubber on floor , so I came up with my own non-approved way.

Also I cut 2 1/2 cm off the footrest pedal next to it to give slightly more leg room
disturbing carpet underlay.

As per Biblo gotta get it right and there are two freeplays actually.

If put hand on pedal and press down there is 2-5mm slop in actual pedal bearings
on take up, then as you continue to press you see clutch shaft move in (the real free play) and go hard after 10-20mm usually.

Now I know my clutch is getting worn and I opt to mimimze free play so it releases a reasonable distance from floor.

I adjust mine for about 5mm or so of free play.

Also I think it best to adjust free after driving and using , not first thing on cold morning.

Also I put a little wd40 on spline shaft/nut just to help and usually hold/twist shaft with good long nose pliers with spanner on nut.

Damm akward in there though, and good strong light helps until it falls in your face, althoguh maybe thats just my fiftes eyesight.

When I had a 6.5 Chev diesel put in my GU, I also had a bigger clutch fitted - it was one hard mother of a pedal and dragged badly. In fact, it's still like driving and aircraft carrier!!

The only adjustment is as Robin says, but be careful - as litle as 3/4 turn on that knurled rod will make a huge difference to your clutch release. Overdo it and the clutch will slip. Underdo it and it will drag (not release).

Is yours dragging or slipping?
