LPG Direct Injection or Conventional

I have a 100 series 4.5lt twin cam and need some
feedback on Direct Injection LPG systems against the conventional air mixed style. I tow a tradesman trailer every day and need the power but the fuel consumption is up around 23lts/100kms. I am putting two "scuba" tanks under the side steps so I dont need a spare tyre swing on the back. I have been quoted around $4500 for Direct and about $3000 for normal. So far I have been told air mixed will drop my performance on both fuels and could also back-fire thru the air cleaner. Very undecided???

Go direct gas injection, It is better in every way.

Take a look at 100scool@yahoogroups.com message no 9983, gives heaps of detail on injected LPG on the 4.5L twin cam (one of, if not the first to have it done). I have the older type of mix, and am happy with it, but can see the advantages in the injected type. I tow an 18ft caravan with
mine, no problems with power.

What you refer to as Direct Injection LPG is actually sequential multipoint port injected gas injection. The gas is injected into the inlet manifold ports upstream of inlet valves, similar to gasoline port fuel injection. Direct injection is where fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. No commercial systems are available for DI LPG.
Didn't mean to detract from the question though. I would certainly opt for multipoint injected system. The reason that conventional diffuser systems suffer so much power loss is due to the gas displacing air. Air (or the O2 in it) is what produces power (when mixed with the appropriate amount of fuel). Less air = less power. The sequential port injection systems will give you improved performance, improved fuel economy, improved emissions and will be a lot safer. I am amazed that the 1st generation systems are still being sold.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but doesnt the sequential injection system still inject into the manifold just before the inlet valves? and hence "displace air"?
As opposed to straight into the combustion chamber just before top dead centre as in a diesel?

Sorry Hugh just re-read your post.
But it still must "displace air" if it is mixed before it enters the combustion chamber? I think the efficiency results from better metering and also
cos these systems automatically start on petrol then swap after 30 seconds or so of running, avoiding the possibility of backfires on start up

Yes, you are right and my reply was misleading to suggest that the port systems don't displace air. My comments came from some engine testing that we did showing that the volumetric efficiency for port systems was improved in comparison to the diffuser system. I should have bene more specific in my reply. Nothing like the improvement in volumetric efficiency you get from DI though. We've been doing work lately on DI gaseous (CNG and H2) with excellent results. Public won't see this for a while I think but certainly very encouraging.

I have the same vehicle with a large conventional Impco setup on it. Hard to tell the difference betweeb LPG and ULP.
I reckon it's great.
