Just sold my 3.3sd mk ute, and about to buy a 4.2 td gq. What differences can I expect in terms of ride quality on blacktop and performance (acceleration and regular driving especially uphill)?

The mk has 4 wheel leaf springs so the 4 coils on the GQ will improve ride on all surfaces. As for performance, the 4.2 diesel isn't a race car, it won't get where you are going fast but it will get you there every time.

On long uphill sections you will probably have to change down a gear or so. But don't try and put your foot flat to the floor as it won't get you there any faster, only waste fuel. If you wanted a fast car you wouldn't have bought a non-turbo diesel. Can't answer how it will compare to the MK.

Yep, the normally aspirated GQ is one tough vehicle.

Yep, hills kill it and you have to develop patience...lol

My 94 GQ however, runs rings around my mates 99 GU 4.2Diesel

On a quiet day the GQ will cruise at the speed limit effortlessly.

14.2km/100lt(7km/l) is the norm for fuel usage. My GQ is using less fuel since I have discarded the roof rack.

If serviced at regular intervals, the GQ should give you 500,000km or more

Mine has done 331,000km.

Cheers
