Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago I came accross an excellent excell based spreadsheet for calculating solar useage, battery capacity and number of days being able to have sufficient power. It is not the one listed on the members file swap on Exploroz but is similar.
Has anyone come accross this file or similar and if so do you remember where it is?

Cheers
Chris.

yes, I am interested in learning as much as possible also in the next week or so as I am constantly having my second battery discharged from a fridge and orange flashing light working off the second battery. I want to hook up solar to the roof of the ute to keep the battery fully charged

there is a good solar chart to show how much power you get over the year
bought 85w solar panel power Waeco 30 fridge and light does good job

Hi

Which raises the question,

just imaging if every house and commercial building in Oz had solar panels and solar hotwaters on their roofs.

How much green and clean electricity could be generated across Australia and how many dirty polluting coal fired steam boilers could be shut down?

And don't forget that coal fired power stations use heaps of crude diesel oil to light up and stabilise the coal fired boilers. If the boilers were shut down that would leave more diesel fuel for our diesel powered 4wds

if only

Good thought Phil, but I wonder how much greenhouse gases/ waste in production of all these solar panels including disposal of units that don't work any more would effect the environment, which would be worse

Phil.

Your correct.
Solar is a great long term view. We have a solarhart, manufactured in 1985!!
22 Years, just think how much of a reduction in greenhouse gases that unit alone has reduced. Most of the unit is recyclable - being copper and Alloy, little waste for 22 (Hopefully longer!!) years of economy.

Hi D-Jack

Disposal of all manufactured items is one the big problems. I have no idea about the whole of life waste implications of solar panels but I do know that the massive environmental degradation caused by coal mining and burning coal in power stations plus the water, ash and general damage to the is an huge problem.

And I understand that the level of greenhouse gases/ waste in production during construction and operation of coal and nuclear power stations and the waste disposal of spent nuclear fuel is enormous. There are no easy answers or simplistic solutions thats for sure.

Cheers

Yep, it sure is a big polluter.

It's also the BIGGEST industry in Australia at $24,000,000,000 - that's billion. Were also the BIGGEST coal exporter in the world - by a long way - 29% of the worlds coal comes from "Oz".

Any idea how were going to replace all the revenue that enhances our way of life? All that revenue and resource tax that pays for our hospitals, schools, universities, roads, police and our smug, superior "high standard of living"?

How about the jobs that will vanish?

Just a few things to be sorted out before we all "go solar", I reckon.

We may have left it all a bit late, dontcha think?

But having said that, I was listening to a guy on radio that seemed to know his stuff about climate change. He said, and he repeated it for effect,,,,,,,

"In 24 hours, there is more solar radiation energy falls onto the land mass surface of Australia than is required to power the WHOLE WORLD for 24 hours!"

That's quite a statment isn't it.

We just haven't figured out how to harness it yet.

Fair point Bilbo,
however are the coal mining companies Australian owned? I heard that a lot of that profit goes overseas, OK apart from the massive amount earned and spent here in Australia. Its a dirty situation to be reliant on dirty power but if we do not look to the future and spend some time to develop new industries with cleaner technology we all suffer. It is not just economics that are of major importance any more, it is survival of the planet.

Yes Bilbo fair enough,
I just read your followup after posting my rave.

Pitty Little John dosn't even have to pay for his own fuel.

Hi Chris

This link has a useful one , just select solar system builder
from main page LHS, and then select your type e.g campers
and fill in the form.

Hi Chris

I've put the one I've used in Members File Swap.

If any non-members want it, email me at mikec at bluesky dot com dot au.
