The maps are great.
No need to calibrate.
OziExplorer can do it for you, but it is easier to simply download from:

http://www.gpsoz.com.au/OziExplorer_Users.htm#map
or:
www.oziexplorer3.com/eng/aussie.html

It's all been done before.

Good luck

Best thing you'll ever do. All my mates gave me heaps for taking a laptop bush, now they are getting them too. The best navigational tool ever. You can find all sorts of interesting stuff and 'fly by instruments' at night too if need be.

I got a piece of high density foam cut to suit the shape of my centre console. Wrap some of that nonslip lumpy stuff around it and it's going nowhere. For really rough stuff I wrap a couple of those small cloth type straps around it and it stays put through thick and thin and is easy to read too. I have a direct feed to the battery for the 12V adaptors of the laptop and GPS so it runs all the time. Just open the lid.

Hi Davoe,

I just bought the Cd version of that not 20 minutes ago from the map shop. Cost me $99. I intend using them for trip planning and then using them on the new PDA with Oziexplorer CE.

Cheers

Why not download maps from the GeoScience Aust website - for free after you register - calibration is easy and some formats may not need calibration.

I downloaded my local area around Canberra 1:250,000 a couple of weeks back and it works a treat. If you need lats and longs for the calibration - google earth will provide them.

Just an option tha that works out cheaper but is a bit of mucking around.

Hi Davoe, if you have any paper maps of areas you want to look at & have a scanner, set the scan DPI to 120 & save as a Bitmap @ 24 bit window. Use OziExplorer to calibrate the image by using the co-ordinate positions taken from the paper map. I have done this several times (especially on maps of 100,000:1 & 50,000:1 scale) with great success & very small error(if any) when using with moving map & checking positions with the GPS. Cheers

Is there any reason why people get Natmap Premium instead of the Hema 4wd raster map collection? I know there is the mosaic which is quite handy on the PC (too big for pda), but for an extra $40 you get Hema 4wd maps for about 13 different regions as well as the 514-map geoscience topos. I have access to both so i will load them up tonight and see if i can find a difference.

Yes - my reason is that Hema, although good for most roads and tracks, are pretty well useless for topography. I didn't know that you got the Natmaps with the Hema pack though.

The hema maps aren't that bad, they're tourist maps so they include a lot of good information and cover a whole region but are usually at a lower resolution like 1:1M. In relation to what is available in digital mapping they are very good. They provide the geoscience topos anyway so you choose the map you want. I just loaded the maps that come with the hema 4wd pack and they look to be based of the same data as natmap premium (i looked at a couple of areas on the east and west coast). You don't get the mosaic and are poorer quality but it's inconsequential for the purpose of getting somewhere or working out where to go.
I think for the extra $40 you are getting a pretty good deal.

Also, i realised the difference after i'd bought the natmap premium and the guy was happy to exchange it for me (after i'd copied it) so i have both versions. I've only been using the hema maps and topos on the PDA.
