I'm a newbie & was wondering if antbody has thought of putting vents in the bonnet
to assist the through-put of air thro' the radiator to held the cooling..... would it work ???? .... only seems to get hot when being asked to do some hard work ?
I have replaced the viscious fan with a twin set of electics from a Ford, blows a hell of a lot of air when the bonnet is up, but seems to reduce with it down.
Thought I'd ask before performing such radical surgery on the bonnet ( Ha ! Ha ! )

Sir gibbo
Check the legality. I believe there's an issue as any escaping liquids from the enigne can end up on your windscreen obscuring your vision.

Mate, i think that would make a big difference, not so much the air coming through, but to let the hot air out!!.( Hot air always rises). Tell you a story, that makes me think it would, I operate hydraulic excavators, and we had one particular machinethat used to heat up badly in the summer months with the large bucket on and the air con running, the whole cooling system had been checked out from one end to the other, still had probs. Anyway we have just purchased a different make the same size, running the same engine same size radiator etc etc.
The difference is the one we have now has more clearance under the engine hood and there are about eight rectangular slots 40mm wide 300mm long cut in the top! You cannot get this thing to run hot if you tried !, And if you stand back and watch it work you can see the heat streaming out those vents.
Sounds like a MAD RAVE eh! but its true.
Cheers Axle.

Don't know that bonnect scoops would help the air out.
At anything above 60k, there is a high pressure area in front of the windscreen.
Some cars run a slot in the front of the bonnet just after the radiator to help air out. This is a low pressure area at speed.
But then, taking air out here depletes cooling air back at the turbo etc.
Have you had a look at the bottom of the engine bay at the firewall?
A lot of air escapes here to the underside of the car.
(Some modern cars have full length undertrays to help with aerodynamics that hinders this.)
Some basic tests, and I realise you may already have done them.
Have you checked the basics like condition of the radiator?
Run your finger up it with a light firmess and see if it crushes under your finger.
Sign the core is corroded.
Have you had a full flush and back wash through
the block and radiator?
Putting extra fans on doesn't help if the cooling system is not up to scratch. :o)
Is the tune of the engine OK, not overfueling?
Is it blowing much smoke, a
sign of overfueling.
(More fuel, more heat.)

I have seen a tag-along tour guide vehicle with a scoop fitted backwards for just that reason. Looks silly but works.

Welcome to the world of Terrano ownership ;-).
Mine runs warm in hot weather even though I have added an electric fan and stiffened up the viscous clutch with more silicone, fitted a new thermostat, a new radiator cap, replaced the water pump and gave it a full system flush. I also popped a hole in the radiator which saw the radiator replaced with a new one.
Nissan was actually cheaper on this than a re-core.
It runs hotter than I would like when working hard, but even when towing in a
Townsville summer and on
the beach in hot weather, it has never boiled.
This could be because:
1. I keep and eye on the gauge
or
2. the computer keeps a better eye on the temp and cuts the power making the vehicle truly gutless before it gets too hot.
The new radiator helped a bit, but I think the main problem is that the cooling system just lacks excess capacity that it need in the Australian heat.

My old Terrano 1992 never runs hot except slogging along
the beach on a hot day with the aircon going flat out. I fitted a 12" thermo fan on the front and a 10" one on top of the intercooler with a manual switch, seems to do the trick. as
well as cleaning out the cooling system.
As far as letting more air out from the bonnet, most off road racers, stock cars and street/drag cars simply jack up the bonnet on the hinges at the back to make a gap.
You can also buy rice-burner bonnet vents from speed shops. I don't know about legality but makes you look like a boy-racer.

Hi!,
Bloke over the road from me experienced overheating problems Worth his Cherokee Auto, tried a number of fixes then fitted spacers between the bonnet hinges and the bonnet itself. Just cut up an old Nylex kitchen cutting board from memory. The rear end of the bonnet lid now sits proud by about 3/8s of an inch. He reckons it's made a heck of a difference when van towing.
