Martyn (WA)
Forumites,
I have a 1989 Classic Range Rover, I'm replacing the rear wheel bearings and I'm having a lot of trouble finding a wheel bearing kit with an outer seal in it, people seem determined to sell me kits with only one inner seal. This particular year had grease lubricated bearings I'm sure this spans other years as
well. the easiest option is to leave the outer seal out and just go with the rear axel oil doing the lubrication which works
well for other years.
Anybody out there with personal experiences, I would prefer that rather than hearsay. The bearings were pretty knacked and were full of axel oil anyway, personally I think I would be better sticking with grease lubricated, my opinion.
Ok, let me have it what are your thoughts?

Hi Martyn,
Just in case you are not aware of Jordan Rover Tech in
John St Welshpool/Bentley.
(Website is: jordanrover-tech.com.au)
Not the cheapest in
Perth but one of the best Rover guys around.
Talk to Kevin. He will be able to help sort it for you.
From memory there is only an inner seal, the drive member has a paper type gasket which seals the outer end of the hub.
Cheers
Disco

Martyn, these sound the same as the 110 Defenders. Large steel spacer with a rubber lip to seal on the outer bearing and the outer seal ran around this. I may have some kickin around in the shed from the old days...they were a dime a dozen in the forces and there used to be heaps kickin around our toolboxes.
If that fails...Im sure I can contact some people I know ;)
PM me with your contact details.
Matt.

If it was my car I would remove the inner seal (used to keep diff oil out of the wheel bearings) and replace the outer hub seal with a double lipped hub seal (from land rover county's).
If your stub axle is damaged/scored where the seal runs you could speedy sleeve it or just get another one.
Drive flange to hub only needs gasket goo.
Any good landrover parts supplier would be able to help you with parts or maybe even part no.s so you can get them from a bearing place.
I have replaced many bearings and stub axles due to water ingress and only greased bearings, oil is the way to go.
