Had to use my Big Haul winch for the first time

When I started 4WDriving 5 years ago I bought a Big Haul hand winch. I've diligently brought it along on all my outings and have never had to use it. I decided that it was going to be one of those things where the time you don't bring it is the time that you will really need it.

Fortunately for the group, I brought it along on the drive to Sunny Corner yesterday. There is one steep and rocky hill on this drive which I've driven numerous times before without incident but yesterday was different.

I drove up the hill in my Patrol without too much drama, just had to experiment with a few different lines. But we spent the next 1.5 hours winching 2 Pajeros and a Hilux over two rock steps. It was hard work but the winch proved to be very versatile and straight-forward to set-up and use.

I think I'll continue bringing it along on all my trips :-)

Anxious moments when someone gets stuck and you need to winch them out but I am sure you saw confidence build as you has success with the first vehicle.
What was different this time that you need to use the winch?

It was actually good fun because we had all the gear and knew that we would be able to get them all over the obstacle (eventually) without any damage.

The last time I was there was 2 years ago, I guess the track has changed over time, the Patrol was still able to drive up but I had to be more careful with which line I took compared to last time.

The pajeors were the scariest, they were lifting wheels and wobbling in the air, everytime they tried to back down to try a different line, the would just start sliding because the wheels were lifting, not much travel on those cars.

Good to hear the ol' hand winch did the job. About to head off around oz for a year or so and cant afford the "U beaut type electric winch" and new steel bull bar as I may never need it. Alternatively I will be taking a hand winch....just in case !

I haven't seen Jackass but you are right, it is the hill that joins up to the Pinnacle track. Good fun to visit every now and then when you feel ready for a generally nice drive with one good challenge.

Is that the hill with the bypass track? I went up there with a friend from work and we were thinking it would take a heavily modded car to make it up the steps, but after doing the advanced driving course with tlcc i think that it might be doable in a fairly stock 4wd with a bit of track building and a good line. My friend is unconvinced. How stock is your patrol?

hi fruers,

my patrol is a stock 2006 3.0 ST-L Auto with side steps, towbar and alloy bar. Only mod is a steinbauer chip for more power and torque below 2000rpm.

You are right, a good line saw the Patrol drive up the hill without any dramas. Some track building would have made it easier still. Important to let the tyres down for better traction, I started at 28psi but eventually let it down to 24psi which allowed it to just walk over some rock steps. There was no need for me to go charging at the obstacles and the only damage I got was a small scratch on my side step from a big rock.

I would highly recommend at least a handwinch, shackles and tree protector. Some gloves will also come in handy. If you take the wrong line, the car will slip sidways and put you at a funny angle from which you can't go forwards and if you tried going backwards, you may back into a ditch or a tree. Only way out is with a winch.

It is quite intimidating looking, a guy with his family pulled up in a lifted cruiser, took a look at the hill, told us we wouldn't get up that hill and left for the bypass track.

we got my mate's unmodded (except for the tyres) 2005 Rodeo manual, TD dual cab, up there with about 27 psi, keeping to the right. Bounced a bit and the knees were shaking for a while afterwards. He chose the line in two sections and I guided him up using the portable.
