hello everyone,
I have a magellan 310
gps that won't hook onto the satellite's, I haven't used it for a while and when I turned it on it just keeps tracking being over half a hour now. I have had it for about four years.

Peter I have a 315 and if I haven't used it for a while and if I move to another location epecially and turn it on it takes for ever to lock on to satelites. Once it has locked on to them it's fine. I'm sure it takes over 10mins to do this sometimes and I see you said you had yours on for 30min but did the
gps have a clear view of the sky above?

g'day Rox,
thanks for that, I rung them and they were very helpful, went through the process and now it is out side tracking, here's hoping. Lucky I was going to through it away. thanks again.

It's only a matter of time before my Magellan 315 fails in this manner. One day it will.
It happens progressively as new sotfware is uploaded to the nav satellites and the older
GPS models can't hack it anymore.
So far I've binned 2 GPSs since they first came out around 1987. I now have a 315 and a much newer Magellan Explorist 210. The 315 is next I reckon.

It seems to lock on to about stellite's but want start up. i will give them another ring.

My 315 did that a while ago. Would start up but could not locate Satellites. Left it for an hour of driving and still nothing. So switched it off in disgust. Next day I fired it up again and Bingo everything was working again. Since then it has performed faultlessly. I use it regularly to give me accurate speed readings. It is a 2002 model but how long the shelf life is, will remain a mystery. It will probably kark it tomorrow...lol

Happened to my 315 about 3 years ago which was 3 years after I bought it sent to WA to be re-tuned and has worked fine ever since.

Hello - doubt if this is the case - proven by fact that
gps units identical to yours still work. More likely just requires some patience, possibly some firmware glitch or maybe harware failure. Newer units do have improved antennas, ability to track more sats and better power consumption (etc) but still feed off same data as delivered from sats "in the beginning" AFAIK.
Cheers

Exploder,
I'm only repeating what happened to my first 2 GPSs years ago. Magellan in Osborne Park were quite good about and did fit upgraded EPROMS, new software etc, all for free. But eventually, they just couldn't upgarde anymore and they no longer functioned at all.
In the bin they went,,,,,,,,

Just recalled the issue with the change over to year 2000 aka y2K (the so called end of the century but a year early). Some older units did not have the ability to give correct time and/or function after this date (31/12/1999)..the magellan Nav 5000 we had at work (in a box in draw) still functioned but date/time was wrong...this is obviously not an issue now if the unit worked after this time...just thought Id mention it
Cheers

I just fired up my GPS300 and I think it might not just be yours.
It has been hanging off the clothes line for 10 minutes and it still thinks it is at
Barrington Tops where I used it a few weeks back.
Might need to go shopping.

You could also have a look at the Magellan website if you have lost the manual. They have them on-line for 'obsolete produsts':

Well, I had to leave it for 20 minutes and then it hooked on to enough sats to tell me that it was in the back yard rather than the front, so all may not be lost.

Hi Leroy,
Sorry taken so long. them been Next Destination, had to clear it all and start from scratch. You hold the right hand arrow key and the power button at the same time. Take's a few time's to get it but will come with do you want to delete all Yes or No. Push yes and then turn back on, set time and leave it outside to pick up the satellites. Took a while to pick them up, about 30 minutes. Going great now.

Peter,
i have an old magellan i pull out of the cupboard every few years.
i literally put it up on the roof to initialize - it needs an unobstructed view. otherwise it takes hours.
Cheers.

I remember seeing that first on Beyond 2000 and later used it with Western Mining 92 and 93.

Hi all
only thing I havent heard so far is upgrade software
I have an old etrex that refuses to die
I have upgraded the software a couple of times from the Garmin netsite via serial cable
Maybe this is the difference - dont know
If there has been a large shift in
gps position (1000 ks or so) from last use unit takes a while to find sats - did it when I switched it on for the first time as new and still does it - maybe nothing is wrong
Hope this helps

You may know this already, but there is an almanac in the
GPS that keeps track of the satellites that it expects to see when the
GPS is turned on. This allows it to quickly lock on expected satellites and away it goes. If the
GPS has been turned off for a long period of time or it has been moved by more than 500km from the last time it was on, then that almanac is out of date and it takes ages for it to re-establish connection with the current satellites that are overhead.
The simple way to get it going in this situation is to do an "Initialization" ofthe
GPS, where you basically tell it where you are and what time of day it is.

I have a 315 (so far so good, fingers crossed that it stays that way!) I read somewhere that it has an inbuilt battery to keep the almanac live. If you store the unit without batteries or they go flat then the onboard battery dies. I guess that with fresh AAs it will recharge making warm starts quick but I wonder if when the onboard one really dies than even a warm start takes a long time.
I haven't looked recently but have Magellan released new firmware that has a GDA96 datum?
Adrian
