Firefighters battle to control Toolangi bushfire
March 5, 2007 - 12:01PM

Mild weather overnight is a relief for crews fighting a bushfire north-east of Melbourne.

Fire authorities said the conditions enabled crews to make significant progress completing containment lines around a blaze in the Toolangi State Forest.

Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) incident controller Steve Grant said more mild weather expected today would mean crews were likely to have the blaze contained later in the day.

So far, firefighters have created containment lines of more than five kilometres around the fire.

Today, more than 100 DSE and Country Fire Authority firefighters are working on the Bull Creek 2 fire, which has burnt about 185 hectares since being ignited by lightning on Saturday.

Two blazes burning north-west of Jamieson in the Eildon National Park are also expected to be contained today.

Fire services have urged people to avoid fire-affected areas.

There was a bit of traffic in Toolangi yesterday. Be nice if we could get a break from these fires. The boys fighting them must be well and truly over it this season.

We were driving in the Cathedral Ranges area on Saturday along Blue Range Rd and actually saw the lightning bolt strike the ridge along the Black Range. It then took only about 15 minutes to see the smoke rising. 1 hr later there were helicopters dropping water over the fires. Looked like just a tiney fire from where we were!
