Hi all,
I have been following some posts on this
forum relating to the successful use of Motorola Satellite Phones with International Roaming enabled GSM SIM Cards installed rather than registering them on a Satellite Phone Plan.
While I understand that there have been some reports of the 9500 and 9505 phones working via an International Roaming enabled GSM SIM Card, I wonder whether this has been tested and proven in a known spot where no mobile phone coverage exists. My understanding is that people have placed their SIM cards in the phone and tested via making and receiving phone calls while still in the area of the mobile phone network.
Do the Motorola Satellite Phones have the ability to work as a mobile phone in an area covered by the mobile phone network or can they only make and receive calls via the satellite network?
I am looking at purchasing a Motorola 9505a Satellite phone and would love to just be able to place my mobile phone SIM card in the phone and make any satellite phone calls (from remote parts of Australia not covered by the mobile phone network) and expect to pay a higher costed phone call and have it billed to my mobile phone bill.
Due to my lack of knowledge on the subject, I would love to hear from anyone that has information to share on this topic.
Thanks in anticipation,
Gavin

No unless the phone has the GSM adapter fitted allowing it to operate on the GSM Network it is purely Satellite based in its function.
The fitting of a SIM card with International Roaming enabled will allow you to make and receive Satellite calls, at a much higher cost per minute than if you were under a contract.
If you are a minimal user than this could be a cheaper option as no monthly fees are applied as would be the case with a satellite monthly plan, IE $30 per month etc.
If you search the archives on here you will find that this question has been answered in detail many times before.
Cheers

I've got a Motorola 9500. The manual talks about an "optional cellular cassette" that "supports various terrestrial or land-based cellular systems". From the picture it looks like it has its own stubby antenna. I don't have it on
mine.
If you do have one, you can configure the phone to use:
Satellite Only
Satellite Preferred
Cellular Only
Cellular Preferred
(obviously I only have "satellite only" on
mine).
I made a couple of
test calls (Telstra GSM SIM card with international roaming on $10/month plan) from within GSM coverage (
Brisbane CBD). It appeared on my telstra bill some months later as a "National Direct" call with origin of SATELLITE. (Cost $3.85 for 1:00 min)
I'm pretty sure that you need a Telstra GSM SIM card (as opposed to another telco provider), since Telstra has a partnership agreement with Iridium. I think I read that somewhere. I don't recall trying it with my prepaid (Virgin Mobile) SIM. Mind you, if it did work it would drain the prepaid balance pretty quick! :-)

I recently bought a Motorola 9505A (secondhand) with the plan of using it for emergency use, with my GSM sim card.
Over the long weekend, we were away in an area
well out of GSM mobile range (actually there was no CDMA or NextGen coverage either). Put my Telstra GSM sim card (with international roaming enabled) in the SatPhone, and it connected and allowed me to make a quick call back
home to verify it was all working fine.
So yes - A telstra sim card with international roaming works fine in a 9505A
